We all have so many, but what's the one that you just keep coming back to, always play twice in a row and get lost in time while listening.

For me it seems to be:

"Big Bug Shuffle"

from the album "Skip Hop and Wobble" players=Russ Barenburg, Edgar Meyer and Jerry Douglas

Wow - great question, JW. One that I'm going to have to give thought to just to narrow down to a manageable list of 3-5. But the question is sure to raise some great tunes and memories (because all great tunes have memories attached to them).

I'll double that for "Never Going Back Again". Hopefully, one day, I'll get it right.

One of my favourites is "Needle and the Damage Done" - Neil Young.

And for a straight up, feel good, hit them strings hard strummalong, try "Free Bird". If you can find someone to play lead, even better.

...and ANYTHING by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils

Just a thought. Did anyone ever see Monty Python's 'Secret Policemans Ball'? Pete Townshend (The Who) did an acoustic version of 'Wont Be Fooled Again' and it was FAN - BLOODY - TASTIC. I don't know who the name of the guy he played it with - probably someone famous. I'm not big on pop trivia.

The list is extensive, but here's a shot:
-----------------------------------------------
Police Dog Blues - Jorma Kaukonen version
Your A Big Girl Now - Bob Dylan, Blood on the Tracks
Dark Hollow - Grateful Dead, Bear's Choice
Rings - Leo Kotke version

...Tom Robinson??

This reminds me of a Dylan Tribute I was watching some years back. Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready appeared as an acoustic duo and played "Masters Of War". It was absolutely capitivating...

Word was that Townsend was completed blitzed when he performed "Fooled" for the Ball. Also performing on the show was Eleanor Bron, who played the priestess Ahme in the Beatles's film Help!.

I saw Vedder do a great acoustic version of "Gimme Some Truth" at a show a couple of years back.

HYmmmmm...brain fart. Guess it would help if I asked again.

I had asked if you ever got your home studio up and running. I mentioned that I was working on a couple of tunes and it would be cool to send then to you (when finished) to let you add some vocals and/or harmonies.

Time in a Bottle, Operator, I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Photograph and Memories - Jim Croce

Selling The Drama - Live (acoustic version)

Plush - Stone Temple Pilots (acoustic version)

I'll Always Love You - Michael Johnson

Broken Hearted Savior, and Bittersweet - Big Head Todd (I'm not sure if Todd ever did an acoustic version of either or both songs, cos it surely sounds good when played on an acoustic guitar)

Saw a special with Roy Clark a long time ago (yeah, always been a fan and catch him on the tube when I can) and he was asked who his favorite player was and his response was along the lines of "All the guys you can mention, Chet, Jerry, Glenn, are great but if you ever go up in the hills, you'll find that some truly great players never even make it off the front porch."

That always gave me focus that you really didn't have to sell a million records to be pretty damn good. I've always told my friends and family that I'm the best player to ever grace my bedroom and will be until I'm gone (and I tell my wife it better stay that way too!).

You are right. Little Martha is a masterpiece. If you have not hear Jerry Douglas cover it yet, it will be a treat. It was the first cut on his recent Lookout for Hope album.

Hello,

Wow! That is a tough question. There are many great accoustic tunes that are as good as one another. So to me, it has to have some more than just a great song. It has to have that special something that makes it in a league of its own. So i have to go with:

- John Lennon - "Watching The Wheels" - To me, not only it is one the best accoustic song ever written, but you got Lennon performing it. You just can't beat that, again my opinion. I don't want to offend anyone.

Thank you very much

Ced

The ones that come to mind that "opened my ears" to acoustic guitar tracks include:

Norwegian Wood -- The Beatles
Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness) -- Donovan
Only You Know and I Know -- Dave Mason
Amie -- Pure Prairie League
Cruel to be Kind -- Nick Lowe
Runaway Train -- Soul Asylum

The early ones initiated me, and the later ones made me want to go learn something new.

David Gates wrote a keeper.

Saw Glen Campbell do this live in the early 70's.
Just him and his Ovation.

I've played it for years,(I only use about half of the chords Glen used), someday I'll learn the rest.

"If" was an easy song to play, one of the first ones I learned. When I tried to remember it recently after my 20 year layoff from playing the guitar, I found that I can't hit the high notes anymore. And I can't sing falsetto like I used to. I don't know if that happened from lack of practice or from just growing older or both.
I found the tab to "Treetop Flyer" last night and will try to learn that. I heard it on the radio on the way home the other night. Stills does some great acoustic work.

Buffett does a nice cover of "TreetopFlyer" on the "BananaWind" album (not mentioned on the track listing - it's a "bonus track" that's tacked-on at the end of the last song). Some tasty slide work on it (if I remember correctly). . . .

Buffett did a tune on a recent live album called "It's My Job". Two acoustic guitars (w/ Mac McAnully (sp)). Great sound.

"The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter" by Will Ackerman. Not the most complex piece, but it's so full of emotion...it just takes me somewhere else whenever I hear it in my mind. Haven't had the recording since I had it on vinyl. Guess I should get the CD. I still remember every note in my head, though.

A kid named Dominic Miller handled a lot of Sting's guitar work. I'm not sure if he did that tune specifically, but he's a great player and should be around for years to come. If you get a cjhance to see Sting's VH1 Storyteller's show, he's on that. Personally I love all the stuff that Sting comes out with and especially the acoustic versions.

it's ironic how few of the tunes listed in this thread were recorded on an ovation...

I've Got A Name- Jim Croche (Ovation I Think)
Walk on Boy- Doc and Merle Watson
I Can't Help Falling in Love with You- Everybody
Alices' Restaurant- Arlo Guthrie
City of New Orleans- Everybody
Always on My Mind- Everybody
Song For You- Leon Russell, Donny Hathaway

I don't know if these songs fit into the "catagory", but all can be played acoustically with favorable results.
The list is endless.

The first song to truly blow me away with the possibilities of the solo guitar that I first heard as a kid - "Eggtooth" by Kottke.

Saw Heart do "Evermore" and was very impressed. Their voices fit that song perfectly.
