I got this note from Damon just a bit ago ...

---------------------------------------
I drove through blizzards and snow storms, and crawled the truck over ice and still did it in less than 14 hours from Bellevue to Jackson, but I needed to do it in 13. Lenora Wright, my nearest and dearest grandmother, passed an hour before I could get here. Mom said she told the hospice people she couldn't go yet and she was waiting for me. She tried. Everyone thought she was going to go in the early morning, but she hung on till 9:30pm. I got here at 10:30. Her Birthday was yesterday, and she passed today. She turned 84. Mom did take her to see the Nutcracker in The City last weeekend. She had always wanted to see that. I just wanted to say goodbye and sing and play her one more song. She bought me my first guitar, a Carlos student nylon. I played and sang my first song ever for her way back then, Country Roads, by John Denver. She had no idea the things that I've been doing for the past few months, but I didn't have a chance to share it. I'm going to miss her. Very much. Services will be the weekend after Christmas in San Diego. She'll be buried next to my grandfather Lt. Commander Edwin A. Wright. I'll be in town here in Jackson till then. I'm not really in the mood to go on the forum, so if you see someone asking for me could you let 'em know I'm offline for a bit? That's all I got in me right now man. Damon
----------------------------------------

Nothing else to say except that despite the pain, Love triumphs over all. Damon has something most of us can only dream about.

Damon, I am very sorry for your loss.

Your grandmother knew that you were always with her, and will remember the songs that you shared with her while she was here.

Our thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

Damon, even if you don't check in with us for a while, I'm sure you know that you and your Grandma are both in our prayers. Having "family" here is a blessing, and it also hurts when one of us is having troubles. We do hurt for you dear brother. May she rest in peace, and may YOU know that even if you didn't make it in time to say good-bye, she knew you loved her.

You both tried and did your best. She wouldn't want to to feel badly, so just buck up and know she lived a good life and her time was up.

Damon,

I'm sorry for your loss. Your effort to say goodbye to your grandmother shows how you felt about her. And I'm sure she knew it. Your hurting now, but you were blessed to have had such a relationship.

So sorry Damon. I'm there with you, mate.

Something very similar happened to me at the begining of last year.

I got the phone call at about 10am at work. Granma had taken a turn for the worse. They were actually going to release her from hospital that morning. My mum let me talk to her - she was so close to leaving. At least I got a chance to speak to her.

Was on a plane by 11am, but when I landed, my cousin who was sent to pick me up informed me that she'd gone.

We went straight to the hospital, which was over 2 hours away. She was still lying in her bed. The nursing staff knew that my younger brother, older sister and I were still en route, so the nurse left her there to allow us to say our goodbyes. I can't thank them enough for their kindness.

I'm thinking of you Damon.

Damon,
The special bond you have with your grandma is the kind that won't ever be broken; at the end of the book of Proverbs it reads, "and her children will rise up and call her 'blessed.'" Your grandma must have been a very, very special lady; what wonderful memories you have to reflect back on.
Like many others here, I too will be praying for you and your family.
Here's a long hug from one person who's also lost her best grandma,

Thanks for the support, prayers, and kind words everyone. They've helped considerably.

I sent that note to Bobbo just after I arrived here and was pretty distraught. Your notes are very comforting, thanks. I was very lucky to have her in my life. I've been busy arranging some pictures and digitizing others. Not sure the best way to integrate them into the service, but I think a song's length with a few of the best shots. I don't think we want to comment between pictures. Too much of a slide show I think. Just 3-4 minutes of music and pictures. We're not sure yet.

I will play something. Don't know what yet. I have a couple ideas, but nothing that's stuck out more than anything else. Suggestions are welcome.

I just did this picture, one of my personal favorites.

In loving memory.

I wish I could think of a good Grandma song for you, but if you want an easy, touching one for a mother of boys, do Momma by B.J. Thomas. I think it's just 4 chords. Let me know and I'll go look them up and send you the lyrics if you can't find them.
