It sucks for sure. I do have plenty of D batteries now though.

After living in Boston during the Blizzard of '78, these little storms don't impress me anymore.
Unless you have National Guard troops riding around with M-16's to prevent looting, people cross-country skiing around town, and snowmobiles on the Charles River, you aren't having fun yet...

Usually Hot Springs doesn't get much snow, even when all around us are buried, but they are predicting that we won't get much and that scares me as they are usually wrong.
OMA, thanks for the memories of '78! I was working in inspection on the third floor in Moosup. I bet Beal remembers too. They were predicting flurries, but I told Beal we were going to get three feet. When I turned out to be right, he came to me for weather predictions after that. I never got it right again. |

I stopped in the liquor store and bought a six-pack.
The store-dude told me that I would need more than that, and that he was closing early. He had brought-in a little TV, and they were interrupting everything with weather updates.
[So I bought a case, some vodka and a carton of cigarettes... Y'know, the essentials]
That night we got 28 more inches of snow, and governor Dukakis called in the National Guard.
No work for 5 days, unless you were a doctor, nurse, or you could walk to work. No buses, but the subway was free. One lane plowed down the street for Fire Trucks and Police. No cars.
The weather was nice and sunny for the next week, but the city was crippled.
Lots of people just standing around drinking beer and schnapps. An impromptu Holiday.
It was Great! |

Location: Budd Lake, NJ | We had 11.5 inches here in October; there were places within 5 miles of me that didn't have power from Tuesday to Friday. The trees were still all fully leafed, and they took the poles down as well as the lines.
Our storm came through yesterday; a ton of rain, some freezing rain mixed with snow this morning, but at least no outages. I'm sure we'll make up for it down the road, though....

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | In '78 I-80 was dubbed the "Snow Chi Mien Trail" by the truckers...I had to drive from Casper, WY to Dubuque, IA for a gig leaving on Sunday AM and arriving by Monday afternoon...I nearly went snow blind (to this day I have trouble seeing in glare)...Made it, set up, played the first night of a month long gig, and woke up the next AM to 40 inches of snow: everything was paralyzed but we played anyway...meals were served in the club, bar never closed, and we had a blast…The new Ford Econoline w/ its 300 six/ 5 speed manual did great in getting us there w/8 track blasting…as did my O Pacemaker and Les Paul Custom once we arrived…

Location: Boise, Idaho | March 3, 1966 in the Dakotas and Minnesota. I don't remember how much snow, but it drifted up to all the second stories and the overpasses. 40 below with steady 40 mph winds. My family of 7 was stuck in the last vacant hotel room we could find in Fargo. That was our welcome to North Dakota. We had to dig down to find the street signs. |

Location: Utah | Back in the mid 80's I was blessed with spending a lot of time in Midland Tx. On the weekends I would drive the 300 miles to the nearest city or attraction. In '85 or '86 I went to San Antonio to avoid a rainy storm in west Texas, but systems converged unexpected.
I arrived in San Antonio to 13 inches of snow! Somewhere in a box I've got pictures of cross country skiers passing in front of the Alamo!
Watching Texans try to drive in the snow was good entertainment. |

Tomorrow they say it might warm up to 2 above, but still very windy. That is so unusual for Hot Springs, but the old timers say it used to get to 40 below WITHOUT the windchill for several weeks in a row. Some have predicted an "old fashioned winter". I think I'll take a few weeks off and head south. (I wish.) |

Location: New Hampsha | We were right in the middle of it. Take everything and coat it with one full inch of ice. We lost power for 24 hours, but we are lucky.
It looks like a war zone outside - none of the trees left standing have many branches. I had to use the chain saw for two hours just to clear my driveway so I could get to the street, only to find out it was closed by downed power lines in both directions. You had to watch for falling limbs and chunks of ice when you were out. I took an ice chunk on the face that cut me.
The supermarkets were cleaned out of water, batteries, and flashlights. People were buying bottled water to flush their toilets! We hauled water from our pond, and we have a wood furnace; as I said, luckier than most. Say a prayer for those who are still without power - it sucks freezing in the dark. :( |

We never got the high winds they had advertised, but it's COLD!!! It's about three below right now (quarter after two, Mountain Standard Time) and they are expecting a low of minus 21 tonight. And NOW we're starting to get the wind, so the windchill factor will we Minus 40 tonight. I'm going to go home and stay put tonight! |

And it is true ... acoustic guitars don't need electricity. It was like a camping trip! Turned out to be fun except last night it got down to 10 degrees ... brr! There are still a lot of people without power so I guess I'm lucky. Got to hang out in a coffee house and see Slumdog Millionaire. Pretty good flic. Ciao. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Arizona is not immune. Snowing like hell in Flagstaff right now and the snow line is down to about 4500 ft. Flag expects 15-18 inches. Here in the valley cloudy but 65 degrees. By the end of the week we should be in two-fer mode. You can ski in the morning, then drive 2 hours south and tee off after lunch.

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | It was 24 below at my house this morning. It's up to 12 below now. But no Flacky, we don't have this year after year. That's what makes it so much "fun". This is my fifth winter in Hot Springs, and only the second time I've seen such cold. Usually winters are mild here between the mountains that surround us and all the warm water just beneath the surface. It usually gets up into the 50's and 60's during the day (OK, sometimes it's in the 30's, but I have also seen 70's, even in January!) Night time temps drop into the 20's, but that bright sunshine does wonders. Today though, our high temp is supposed to be two above. They are only expecting ten below tonight. Downright balmy compared to last night.
We never lost power, so it's just an adventure. For those back east who are still without power, my heart goes out to you. I hope you are all safe and warm in a shelter somewhere, and that your power is restored soon so you can go back home and start dealing with frozen pipes! |

Location: New Hampshire, USA | I lost power last thursday night and didn't get it back until last night (wed). A full week of no power, and no water (we're on a private well), and no phone or internet. We burned wood in a woodstove and a fireplace to keep the pipes from freezing. Good times.
I played my Koa Celeb quite a bit - it stood up to the temperature fluctuations quite well. |
