I recently changed strings again on my Elite LX 6778........I decided to take all the strings off so I could lower the action. It was simple but my question is..............I had only two shims under the saddle whereas I read some post where people have three shims under the saddle. Does the factory place whatever they think is necessary being that each saddle is not precisely made to the same depth? I took out the thinner shim and left the slightly thicker to try out.

Just wondering if each model is different or all "O's" have the same # or should have the same # of shims?

:D

Interesting question.... Since the USA guitars are handmade, it seems unlikely that each would be identical in every way.

Once the guitars leave the factory, however, it seems a moot point. Environmental factors will effect the guitars in different ways, and thus shims need to be removed as necessary for the action to be either factory spec or adjusted to taste.

When the guitars leave the factory they all have a minimum of two shims. Since every neck angle fit isn't exactly the same, though they are very close you might need an extra shim or even possibly a tapered shim to achieve the correct string height at the 12th fret and also at the saddle. There are slight differences in all the guitars to a certain degree but we try to setup all of the actions to the same specs. therefore there might be different shims i.e. thick or thin or tapered depending on the individual guitars needs. You also have to account for any differences at the saddle slot rout operation. Just remember that although there are many automated operations the biggest amount of work is still done by hand.

My CE768 came with 2 shims but I now use 3 (thanks again to TRBoy for making it all possible :)

On all three of my guitars that I have removed shims from, they had two shims of differing thickness, and I removed the thicker one. Each was a different model: 1777, MERB598 and 2002 Collectors.

Shims can be made out of plastic styrene strip(available at good hobby shops) if you need it, you just need to check your shims for width and decide what thickness you need.
