Location: State College, PA | On my 1994 Collectore's I'm finding a slight tendency toward fret buzz on the 4th string, most especially the 5th and again only slightly on the 6th strings, all while playing at the 12th fret.
I'm up there all the time and have to go unrealistically easy on the high A to keep it from buzzing. It's the only spot on the neck giving me any trouble...
What's my proper course? Is there likely to be something going on at that fret on the 5th string that I should be able to see? It appears to be flush with the neck.
Should I address this with neck relief or a slightly higher bridge on that side - and if it's the bridge, will I want a tapered shim (shallower at the 1st string and thicker at the 6th) so that the entire bridge is in uniform contact?
Anybody's favorite links to action adjustment or and other advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks all - |

Location: Central Oregon | My 1115 took a beating in shipment & it had a buzz on the 12th fret big E & a little bit on the A string too. The problem was that the top end of the 14th fret had popped up just a tiny bit. The case had cracks so it took a beating. I pushed it back down with a piece of wood & it was fine for a while. Eventually it came back up so I shoved a tiny dab of epoxy under the edge with a bit of plastic, pushed the fret back down in place & washed off the excess glue with alcohol. Been ok since. You may have a similar problem. |

Location: Florida | shims - if its buzzing way up that high
fret level - if its only happening at fret 12
Adjusting the relief is a good thing, will lower the overall action if the relief is too large, but will do nothing at all past the body/neck joint.
At 10years old... I'd hate to think its neck reset time, but the first sign of needing one can be the buzz right at the body/neck joint.
There is this symptom call "the rising tongue" but whats actually happening is the neck is tilting from the joint. To get the action reasonable, you lower it at the saddle... but then the tongue seems too high, and its reset time.
The other thing - put a straightedge on the neck when its got strings tuned to pitch. That will tell all. You'll see where the rises and dips are. |
