I'm thinking of selling my preacher. (chuckles) The guitar!

It's a nice burst paintjob (dark on the outside and natural brown on the inside) w/standard dot inlays. The bridge is gold colored, maybe brass? I've seen pictures of nickle, but not brass. This one has the preacher logo etched into the pickguard. It's in really great shape, only a few modest dings, mostly on the backside.

Does anyone know when this guitar was made and (about) how much it is worth?

Thanks

Recent Ebays have gone for around $300 in very good to excellent shape with original case.

stephent28, thanks for the update on recent ebay sales. I called a local dealer and according to the vintage guitar book, he said that the Preacher (in excellent condition) goes for $400-$500. I thought most figure's I've seen were around $300-$400 so that was a bit of a surprise. He said that the Orion guitar book typically offers a bit higher prices than the more often used "blue book" (don't know who makes that one) and a guitar value book from "vintage guitar".

Mine is in really excellent shape but it is without the HSC. I am not very experienced in grading guitars. I would guess it to be an 8 or 9 out of ten simply because of a few dings here and there. I would keep it but I need a lightweight guitar because of my ailing back. So I'm in the hunt for a nice used Gibson SG. Sometimes if you really need to sell something quickly, ebay works great...

So far I haven't seen a picture of a bridge that looks quite like mine. Not only does it look like brass, it also has a plastic shroud around the rearward section. It's not an after market add on or modification because of how the whole assembly fits perfectly into the angled cutout cavity. So I wonder if it's a bridge upgrade, or maybe they simply made these guitars with different bridges and I just haven't seen anyone else with this bridge.

Has anyone here seen this golden/brass looking bridge with a plastic cover? Also, is the vintage burst paint job standard issue or not as common?

Thanks!

The bridge you are describing is actually the original bridge used on Ovation solid body electrics. If you look in my photos section, you'll see a Viper and a Preacher 12 string with that basic bridge.

moody, I'm new here. Would you please direct me to these pictures? Thanks for the hardware info.

So would this bridge mean that it's an older or a new model? And do you have any guestimation as to it's value?

Value has been covered and is correct.
It's a guitar from the 70's, with the early style bridge probably the first half of the 70's. I don't think being more specific than that should realllly matter? The s/b is one of three original finishes offered.
A nice SG? Do those exist? I like them even less than preecheurs but that's just me. They would be light weight and help your back problem. A hollowed out warmoth strat or tele would do the job as well unless you're looking for that Gibson HB sound.

If you want something light try a Blueshawk.

Thanks guys. About the finish and bridge and all, I didn't know. Your assistance is much appreciated.

Well, when I say nice, I don't mean the finish, I don't mind nicks and dings as long as it plays and sounds great. I'm a die hard humbucker man. And I like Gibson style guitars too. I recently tried out an SG, and boy was I impressed with it's sound and playability. It was an Epi 61' reissue and boy was she sweet.

I might try a blueshawk. But I would prefer the pair of duel humbuckers over the two P90's. And I would rather have at least two volume controls. Still, your right, I might like, especially if she's light.

So my guitar is only worth about $300 tops. Does anyone have any comments about the vintage guitar price quote of $400 to $500!?! I was told that book was about the best in terms of accuracy and not overrating prices. Evidently some exceptions apply. That's a pretty large exception if you ask me.

Those books appear to be guidelines and are very seldom correct. What the market will pay is the correct price and I have seen selling prices on various guitars be hundreds under "the book value" and I have seen guitars go for double the book value.

Ebay is a good tool as long as you are prepared to accept the final price. If the right buyer at the right time and the right place comes along......

1WAY ... just my two cents, but hunt down a nice USA-made Hamer with hummbuckies. There's enough of them around (and on eBay), that you can pick up a pretty good one for under a grand, even less if you'll take one with 'the lived in look'. A better guitar will be hard to come by. Don't know about the weight tho' mine's pretty heavy. aLeX is one of the resident experts on Hamer around here, and he might even have some in stock.

Thanks for the interesting responses.

stonebobbo, I bet the SG is going to be hard to beat on two main fronts.

1) It's a really light, quality built guitar

2) It really sounds good to my ears

I recently have been testing out SG's from Gibson and Ephiphone, and I am rather amazed over how good they sound and feel. I used to think that Les Paul's were the best guitar period, but I think that the SG is better. From my perspective, the good enthusiastic reports you might hear about the Epi 61' reissue SG Standard seem very accurate. It's not a cheaper model, and many say it's pretty comparable to the expensive Gibson equivalent. It was one of those guitars that as soon as I started playing it, I was excited at how well she played. The action was very low and user friendly, the neck was awesome, the pickups were top notch except if I was to be in a band, I would replace the bridge pickup for the best out there, which should represent a modest improvement.

It comes packaged with a very nice hard shell case. So far it's either that guitar (brand new for $725) or a used Gibson SG.

E Sherman, I wrote you back as soon as I got your email, thanks for the interest and email.
