Location: Las Cruces, NM | Great interview, and it proves what we all know if we read Sergio's posts that he is a very intelligent and erudite commentator on matters musical. I, being prejudiced, particularly liked his bluegrass comments, and mentioning Sam Bush proves his solid credentials.
I also liked his comments about people trying to do ethnic music who are not of the ethnicity, that is, who didn't grow up with the music as part of their life. That is the feeling I got when I hung around Nick, one of the best Mexican musical guys in San Diego. He ran one of the best San Diego Old Town restaurants and opened one in Poway luckily for us Poway pickers it was right across from Poway Music, and he bought musical stuff from Bill, including a mandolin. He had a great classical voice and was learning mandolin, so we became good friends, my bluegrass friends and I would jam with him in Poway and he would show us the proper way to play the Mexican classics, he had the best mariachis on weekend nights and I let him borrow my PA system. We, us bluegrass guys, could never get those marichi rythyms exactly right, and he always thought that 4/4 was not much of a rythym, but he liked our songs, so we would play on Fridays in his restaurant, and shake the gourds and such on Saturday with him and the mariachis. Nick was 70 years old then so I don't imagine he is to active today, but it was a golden time for all of us.
Very good interview Sergio, some great insights.
