Charts and diagrams are all over the Internet, but they don't necessarily help you learn them if you don't already know what to do with them. Are you trying to learn some common scale patterns, or how to apply scales/arpeggios in your playing etc? What type of music do you play? |

Location: Toronto | Interesing, I keep wanting to learn scales and such to improve my playing and every time I sit down and search I get these things that make very little sense to me... So many dots on the fret board but very little in terms of patterns to sink my fingers into...
I'm just a player, a little rock, a little blues, a little contempary, and just want to improve my playing. With very limited time I seem to waste most of it search and not playing...

Location: Las Cruces, NM | I was going to answer this with a suggestion that it was more productive to learn songs and the underlying chord progressions, as any scales and arpeggios have to be played in songs to be useful. Appears I am wrong from the interest shown here.
I'll say it anyway, to play you have to learn songs, songs are made up from chords and scales, spend your time on that and you will make more progress. Arpeggios as accompanyment means you have to know the chords, so there again, you need to learn chord progressions of songs.

Location: Toronto | Hey Bailey - I hear ya - but unfortunately it's not so simple for some of us... I know hundreds of songs on a guitar, but still don't think I can play one.
To try now and sit back and study the chord arrangements and extrapolate from that - man - that takes more time than this poor simple lad has!!

Location: Cherry Hill, NJ | For a lot of us guitar players, dots and notes don't make us players of songs. My suggestion, if you want to improve your playing and learn new techniques, is to just watch other players and learn by what they do. Nowadays with DVD's of performances, you can really focus in one great players and copy their fingering. Of course its very important to have a basic knowlegde of which notes are relative to each key. Most guitar players play in E,A,G,and D, the sharp keys. Depending on what you enjoy playing, I'm sure you can learn much by just watching other guitarists.
