I was going to try and snag a (bottom feeder friendly) multi-fx off fleaBay (say, a 707II, Vamp-X or something like that) but all I really need is a delay. What I want is something I can play a chord into, then play another shape into and it'll just loop and loop and loop while I play scales over the top of it. Make sense? Any suggestions?

If I understand you correctly an RC-20 should do the trick.

Holy fiznuckle...at $250, that's a bit more than what I wanted to spend. I saw a guy using what looked like a digital delay pedal (it was Silver, don't know the brand). He held the pedal down, played a chord, let it loop. At the appropriate time, he held the pedal again and played another chord, different voicing, let it loop. At the appropriate time, he held the pedal and put down a short bass run, let it loop. Then, as all this was looping around, he just ran scales over the top of it.

It struck me as an interesting way of practicing scales without having to fire up Sonar, or Guitarport or something overly heavy for the job. My initial thought was that one of the multi-fx pedals should be able to replicate that...but maybe not, now that I'm thinking about it.

I have a Boss RC-20 (actaully 2)...both I got from ebay ($140 for one, and $180 the other, I think-been a while). Great practice tool for what you are talking about. It's awesome for practicing leads over and creating interesting textures on the fly.

I have a Boss DD-20 (yeah, expensive too) which, as far as I have read, has one of the longest delay times. I haven't tried using for what you have described, so I don't know if it will do what you want.

Some other boss delays were going pretty cheap (below $60) when I was shopping for one on ebay before I bought the dd-20.

I'd suggest trying an RC-20 at a store if you can. It can record up to 5 minutes 30 seconds of music, and you can create up to 10 "tracks" to loop at a time. It also has some basic drum samples to loop for timing if you want.

My .02
Johnny

I have a zoom 707II (you mentioned above) and I love some the sounds in it ( I use if for electric only). I don't think it has a loop function, but I'm not sure. I bought it to replace my Zoom gfx-8, which had a looping feature in it l, but only like 15 seconds or something. Was just too much stuff in it for what I wanted, so I sold it to a friend who loves it. I couldn't get much use of the loop in that short a time to use it effectively. Those can be had for like $130+ on ebay. Depends...ya gotta wait for the right deal-they do come along, but are gone pretty quickly too.

I'd mentioned it here before, but there's a site:

www.themode.com

that has a free musician's classified (broken down by area code). They have "musicians looking for bands" and such, but they also have gear for sale. Might be worth a look-see . . .
