Location: Upper Left USA | I am curious what some of the characteristics of the newer Viper are. I have never played one and have hardly touched any of the solid body units.
Are they comparable with a solid body guitar or are they closer to playing a plugged in acoustic with zero feedback?
Can you get the same sound out of them as a Strat, Tele or whatever?
I know so little in this area that I can't even fake it, so go easy on me! |

Location: Midland, MI | I'm curious too, given that it reminds me of the Fender Stratacoustic/Telecoustic/Stratocaster Acoustasonic things...except with a wood back instead of their fiberglass. |

Location: Tennessee | MWoody ... I'll give you a first hand report in a week or so. I just scored a newer Viper off eBay. I already have a Viper bass and it is awesome.
I also have a solid body Viper and it is my favorite electric to play, except sometimes (like earlier tonight) when I get into it with my Hamer Mirage. :) The 1271 Viper is very Tele like. Pickups are a bit hotter, and the Viper I have is all Mahogany so it seems to be warmer and more resonant than some of the other Vipers I've played. Even so, it's got more bite than my AmStd Strat, but it still cleans up very nicely.
You're gonna love that Viper you got. I'm not sure what the samhill is up with the electronics ... the output jack is normally where the hole is, and the configuration of the knobs and toggle switch are all off. I think BruDev posted breakdowns and schematics in his gallery ... if they're not there let me know and I'll send you the ones I downloaded. |

That Viper looks a lot like mine if you take away the damage. Pickgaurds were available from the factory a year or so ago. somebody obviously took it apart and put it back together with the knobs and plug switched. Check with the factory on the pickgaurds. If you can make one, great, mine has small cracks around the plug I might be interested in a wood one. Just jokin for now, but that is possible.

After reading the cruster Viper post it looks like maybe Chandler has Viper pickgaurds. Also, there was a ton of good tips in that post. |

I was watching that one you got...you know, the bottom feeder in me just ain't ever satisfied. But, I figured one Project Viper at a time is probably sufficient. My take on the 'big hole in the body' was that the output jack got ripped out of the pickguard, so they just moved it up between the knobs. The hole that you see under the missing chunk of pickguard is actually the route for the switches/jack/wiring and the foil lining is all crumpled up in there. I don't think it has a big hole in the body at all.
The pictures make it look like your 'burst has more red than mine. But, you don't appear to have a divot in the back of the neck. :)
Congratulations! I hope you enjoy it as much as I am enjoying my project. If this goes well, I may just start bottomfeeding in earnest. :)
(Oh, and my pickguard, which appears to be a Chandler replacement, is single-ply black. I'm not sure if I like the look of the black/white or the single black. Hrmmm.) |

I had set a low bid and because a couple of Viper distractions showed up (Yes!) I got it. I think the price was low and the damage minimal. I intend to laminate some veneers and make one or two wood pickguards. I'll consider a refinish as well. Just have to see what shows up at my door!
Not expecting to get the Viper I accepted an offer on a 1251-5 Breadwinner. Not expecting any issues but we'll see what shows up. Seller wanted $310 and it looks/promises to be a clean unit.
I most definately tripped the SONAR alarm at home though! :eek:
I can see a trip to the masuese (sp?) in my Wife's near future as well as Dinner out.
I will reference Crusty's post when it comes time to field strip my aquisitions!
