The only issue I could find was the lack of a label. However, where the label would be, "AAA" was written in black magic marker before the top was put on. Does that mean a AAA spruce top?

Location: SoCal | The 2 piece neck would mean that it's not an Elite as they have always had 5 piece necks. My guess is that it's a Celebrity. They had a model in the exact configuration you desicribed, but don't ask me what it is as I don't know Celebs that well.
The price would be about right. |

Hell, if it sounds good, buy it and we'll all have fun figgerin' out what the heck it is. Then again, if it sounds good, who CARES what it is. |

Location: SoCal | It's Celebrity. Trust me on this one. The other giveaway on it would be the end of the neck. Is it long a tapered like an Adamas neck, going to 22 frets, or is it much shorter?
If you like it, buy it. $400 is a fair price. But it is a Celeb. |

They have an Adamas there also...I'll compare the necks the next time.
Paul's observation of the 2 piece neck makes sense.
If is is a USA Ovation, I would love to have it. But for me, I just can't see having 3 acoustics. I did think about selling it on E-bay and make a few bucks. That is if it is what I think it is.
Then again, you can't count on what an e-bay sale would bring either.

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | I agree with Paul, it sounds like a Celebrity, until you get to the "USA" stamp. I'd get the serial number if it's there and note the pre-amp type, that should help ID it.
Maybe a Celebrity with a USA neck put on it????? But who would or even COULD do that????

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Speaking of treasure, I found something when I was in Indiana last week that might be of interest to someone....Tom Pickett's Music Shop in Columbus, Indiana has what is either a very lightly used or NOS 1768-LTD Elite(that is what it said on the label), exactly like the one on the cover of the Walter Carter Ovation history book. I played it, it sounded quite wonderful. There was no price on it, and given the prices on everything else(this is a small town music shop), I would expect it to be high. But it is available if one is looking for a 1768-LTD.
I believe Pickett's used to be an Ovation dealer, but they are not anymore, this is why it might be NOS.

Location: south east Michigan | Yeah...it's a (ahem) celebrity. I took into a different room with better light. The faint "USA" accually (ahem) disappered! Yeah..that's the ticket....it ahhhh vanished into thin air!
Still a nice guitar though. I'm trying to convince a friend to buy it. |

Location: Upper Left USA | I know that, at times, I have typed faster than my brain could really think about what I'm saying and I may have put down Celebrities before - but:
they can sure take a beating (Youths and beginners!)
they come in some really cool colors
they have some awesome wood tones and patterns (even if it is only skin deep)!
There are probably a lot of "Lurkers" that enjoy this board but don't take part because it hypes USA models. Celebs are part of the "Every Man" vision as well.
And you never know what will turn up next! Palm trees or whatever! |

Location: SoCal | Took a few years but no longer as judgemental as to "brand name." Used to be I only played a Martin. Now I have an Applause uke and soon to arrive Celeb "palm tree."
It will be interesting to compare the "palm tree" Celeb parlor...number of times I have seen a beautiful multi-hole hanging in a guitar shop, then realize it is a Celeb. As this Celeb was purchased based on appearance and size only, doesn't need an ebony fretboard. The amount Suzie will play it - will never need a fret dress. Mediocre to reasonable sound will suffice. Paid more for the appearance and rarity than I did for the 1997-N Collector's. As to veneer, some of the Collector's don't have solid tops. I have a Korean 4861 Ovation Balladeer that compares nicely with the US made Balladeers.
I notice that some of the OFC'ers list a couple of high end O's and one or two Celebs.
Took a few years for me to realize that it is still "play it, like it, then buy it." |
