Random musing ... is there any reason Ovation doesn't put the Elite style bowl (with the bowl access port) on the center soundhole guitars? My 6759 CL12 had the bottom strap peg come loose. I wish I didn't have to take off all the strings to get in and tighten it back up (they're still in pretty fair shape) ... and if it had the trap door I could easily get in and handle the problem in a few seconds.

I believe they don't put the rear-access bowl on the round-hole guitars because they feel they don't NEED to. The hole is for access to the truss rod adjustment on the multi-hole guitars. It is certainly more expensive to make the multi-piece bowl, with the associated fit problem of the opening and closure piece to be controlled, plus the added expense of the hardware to hold it shut.

With that nice big hole in front for truss rod adjustments on the round-sound-hole models, the multi-piece bowl won't be used.

Aesthetics probably come into play as well. . .

With a center-hole guitar, you'd be more likely to see the "backside" of the access hatch through the soundhole.

The newer (last few years) access doors have this big foam rubber sponge on it to help keep it from rattling around. Let's all just put big sponges inside our center hole guitars and see how that improves the sound. In my opinion the access hatch is 1) ugly, 2) detracts from the sound, 3) nothing more than an evil necessity. How many times in your guitars life will the strap button come loose and how difficult is it to just loosen or remove the strings and reach inside. Sorry to sound so cynical, but I just hate that friggin hatch door.

I sometimes wish that I had one just so that I could see/access the inside of my Adamas . . . but then again, I guess it just adds to the whole "mystique" - thing.

Does anybody know if the "new" acoustic-only SlotHead Adamas (whatever HAPPENED w/those??) has an access hatch?

Cliff, I think 3 slotheads were built (Woz and Playadamas each have one, I don't know where the 3rd one is). I played Mike's recently at SoCal OFC Jam and if I recall correctly I think that it does NOT have a hatch. That's why it sounds so good. Same with yours.

If you'll recall, with the first early Adamaii, the hatches were in the bottom side of the guitar, where it sits on your knee.

Ya know...it's a little off topic...but I've always disliked how the visable bracing was left bare on the multi-hole style bodies. You can't see it looking straight at the guitar, but when you're in playing position looking down at the body, you see the bracing through the holes, and it, IMHO, takes away from the apprearance. Sometimes the bracing wood doesn't match any of the colors used on the top, and it sticks out like a sore thumb. It's needs to be there, you know it's there, but it doesn't have to be so obnoxious. Why don't they paint that flat black to match the dark interior of the bowl? It's little touch, but would make the guitar look more asthetic, finished and complete.

Small things to bitch about, I know, and I'm probably odd man out on this one, but, I've often wondered abou it. I did paint it on my first elite. The artist/perfectionist in me hated the way it looked unpainted, and I was the one who always had to look at it while playing.

If you had the proper -4 finish on your Elite, the 'raw' brace would look just fine, in comparison to the top. :)

It's cheaper to build it without the door.
