Hi,

I'm playing a S771 Balladeer Special. Been working out really well.

I've been playing it sitting down, and I want to play it standing up. With a strap, the lower part of the guitar has a tendancy to roll out and upward.

Part of the issue is I have a middle-age, round tummy. I believe the other part of the issue is the placement of the strap peg on the upper bout.

I think if the strap peg were located in the neck heel, the guitar would not have the tendancy to roll out.

Is it possible to add another strap peg, to the neck heel, or even to the bowl area provided that nothing important is being drilled into inside the bowl?

I took the guitar to a local guitar shop, and although the luthier there does add strap pegs, he would not touch my O because of the bolts holding the neck to the body, and because he was concerned he may cause the bowl to crack or split if drilled.

Can what I want (eliminate the kick-out) be accomplished?

Thanks,
-Gary K

Gary:

Adding a strap knob to neck heel may split it or weaken the heel joint in use.

Don't do it. Pull in your gut when you play. Better for your singing.

Thanks for the replies!

I'd hate to have to switch to a flat-back just because of this issue ... After watching Nancy Wilson (Heart) videos, Takamine is starting to look pretty good about now. :)

Thanks again,

Any guitar Nancy Wilson holds is going to look pretty good. Makes me want to be a guitar.

when I got the 1127 in from Dave, no strap peg...leaving it as original.

first Ovation that I have to tie onto the head. no problem, that's what I do for my Martins.

You can easily add a strap button without any risk. Don't go into the "end" of the heel. Put it on the bottom side of the heel about 1 inch in. I'll try to take a photo of one of mine and post it. With the strap on the underside of the heel, the guitar won't slide out/up.

The other thing you can do (I've seen this, but have not done it myself) is to actually put the strap button on the back of the bowl, just in about 2 inches from the heel. Reinfored both sides with thin fender washers. No way the guitar will slip like this.

Of course in either case you are altering the originality of the guitar, which has its pros and cons. But personally I could never play a guitar straped at the peghead, so really there wasn't an option for me.

Thanks for all the replies!

I happened to go to a local Guitar Center. I found on a new S771 that the front strap peg is now factory located approx. 1/2" more to the backside of the guitar (where on my S771 the peg is more in the middle).

I tried it in the store with a strap, and it eliminates the bottom side kick out. So now I plan to relocate the peg myself.

Can anyone say, is it any big deal to drill a small hole in the bowl? Do I need to worry about the bowl splitting?

Thanks again,
-Gary K
