Anybody seen the Chili's commercial with the big guy playin' an Ovation ukulele. The uke actually sounds really good, but I can't tell if that is the original sound or not.

I've been thinking about an Ovation (Applause) uke or a Fluke for a while but have yet to hear either. None of the local shops carry decent ukes if any.

I have a cheap Johnson uke and I'm not real happy with the sound. True you get what you pay for, but I've heard toys that sound better for less. Being a beginner with little experience and nothing to compare it to, I'm wondering if anyone can share some thoughts on an Ovation (applause or celeb) ukulele.

Is it irony or stupidity to get G.A.S. from a food commercial?

Thanks!

I saw the commercial for the first time last night. Nice to see Ovation get some TV time. Especially cool at the end where the guy flips the uke on it's side and you can clearly see the round back. It doesn't look to me like the guy is playing live but his sync and fingering is pretty good. No telling if the overdubbed uke track was done on an Ovation or not. I'm not a uke player but I did pick up Kim's and strum a few chords during the OFC jam session. I was mightly impressed. Dave

I saw it last night too.. EXCELLENT!!!! It's VERY distinct in the commercial, it was nice to see that headstock on TV again. As far as the sound on the commercial, it's hard to say because of the processes involved. Unless you were there when it was recorded you'll never know. But... I have heard the Ovation uke... many of them while in Hawaii, they are VERY popular with the locals as they sound great and can handle the humidity, sand, salt, poi, huli huli sauce, tsunami, and anything else that may come up.

Good! I was hoping to hear some positive reviews.

Are they all Applause? Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Also, could anyone tell if it was a tenor, soprano, or other style?

Interesting that you guys should bring up the ukulele. I bought, on dvd, the Beatles Anthology and on it, learned that George Harrison was a real uke fan and player. I've had one in my closet for a couple of years that was a gift. Now, because of this thread, I scouted around, found some websites that show how to tune a uke and what the chords are, and I'm gonna learn to play that sucker. Eventually, I'll get an Ovation uke.

The one used in the chili's commercial is an applause tenor uke. Dave

Hey Paul Moody, On the Paul McCartney DVD "Back In The USA", he tells how George was a uke fan and then Paul plays a tribute to him by performing a solo rendition of "Something" on uke. Sadly it's a Martin uke that he uses. Paul also plays Martin acoustic 6 strings on a few other numbers. Too bad he didn't still use Ovation gear. His keyboard player (Wicks) played an ovation 12 string on a few numbers but it was almost un-noticable in the background

Paul;
I got the Beatles Anthology DVDs too, isn't all the concert footage great? On Pauls DVD of the recent tour, 'Back in the US' He plays a tribute to George, 'Somthing' on the ukelele. Unfortunately not an Ovation though. Little Steven Van Zant plays an Ovation on the 'Live in New York City' DVD by the E-Street Band.

I've tried the fluke and the ovation and my preference is the ovation. Like always, it's a matter of personal feel. The fluke people make something called a flea, and if you're a true beginner and you can get a good price, then I'd get that one. If you have more experience, say a year of playing under your belt go with the ovation. Besides you can plug it in, put on some distortion, and sound like the Uke God.

George Harrison's posthumous CD Brainwashed features some uke playing. Quite good stuff.

Geez

Ignore my post on the ukelele, I used to play one of those suckers, but they didn't sound as good as the ad.

No music is as good as it is in a commercial. By that I mean, the music doesn't stand alone. Example, that Volkswagen commercial, with that Nick Drake song, Pink Moon. When you listen to it separately, it's OK. In the context of the commercial it's sublime. Conversly, something like Rhapsidy in Blue, stands alone, and is dragged down when put into a movie or commercial.

Rhapsody in Blue... wasn't that the theme for American Airlines for years? Fly the friendly skies...

I just saw that Chili's commercial last night- I've never heard a ukulele sound that good... but I've never heard an Ovation Uke either.

Football fans, Vikings fans more specifically, may recognize former offensive linemen Esera Tuaolo as the singer featured in the commercial. Whether or not the uke sound is authentic, I can tell you that his singing is.

One last note, on the Beatles Anthology dvd, George is not only playing a uke, while Paul's strumming his uke, George is playing lead on his.
