What is the difference between a 5 piece neck made in 1978 and a one piece neck made in the USA in 1982? Is there a quality or size difference in any way? Is one thinner than the other--easier to play, etc.? Please help, Thanks, John

I know one thing, the 5 peice neck with the K-bar is solid as a rock. I have a 94 1711 Balladeer with two piece opposed mahogany, and I also have a slight twist, and dip in the neck. I have an 81 Legend with the 5 piece mahogany/maple neck, the fretboard is perfect.

I think for the neck alone, the vintage USA and higher grade current USA models are worth the money (if you can afford them).

Skymind, I think the neck you are talking about in 1982 is a 2 piece not a 1 piece neck. These are great necks with the K-bar. But I have always liked the 5-piece Ovation neck. To me it is as much a symbol of Ovation as the roundback. As far as feel goes, I have a 1975 Custom Balladeer with the 5-piece neck, and it is very thin with a sort of V tapor to it. It is as comfortable a neck as I have ever played. Now I also had a 1990 Custom Balladeer with the 2 piece mahogany neck, and it to me was a large, rather round neck. I never could get use to that one. My Adamas has the two piece walnut neck, and it feel kinds in the middle of the two. I suggest you find a guitar and play it. I have really seen some different neck sizes on Ovations. But I will always love the 5-piece neck. That was a great idea....Paul Hebert

Al,
You explain things so well and simply. It would have taken me several lines to get across what you were able to do in just one numeral. Well said!!

How about our solid bodies, the neck on my Viper seems to work, but it certainly isnt 5 piece, more like 2? It seems to be flexible but the guitar seems to stay in tune, it is an easy to play neck.
