Is it just me, or does it seem there is somekind of voodoo spell cast over these instruments we call Ovations? Pixie dust sprinkled on them? Dipped in magical Helicopter fuel?

Perhaps there is cocaine laced within the bowl, cause everytime I set one down, I find myself with the urge to pick it up again within minutes, and repeating this behavior all evening, on a nightly basis!

And furthermore, it isn't unusual to find a guitar player with an assortment of instruments, and brands. Most everyone I know, owns two or three guitars, but from different makes. Ovation owners seem to own just as many or more guitars, but they keep seeking out Ovations (in which I include Adamas).

I was Ovationless and happy a year ago, now I own two, and want more more more! My other guitars are collecting dust! I've been lusting for a natural finished Elite... then I saw Paul Moody's Blonde and felt conflicted... and how about those Adamas I've heard so much about?! I'm so confused! Do you think Ovation would take in a 94 Mini-Van on trade for a few new O's? How about a functional, but moody teenaged indentured slave?! I even find myself comparing frivilous items I buy (like food for the kids, clothes for the wife, heat for the house) in terms of what kind of "O" I could potentially buy with that money! I actually became upset when a couple beat up Ovations I've been watching at the pawnshop sold on me last week before I could afford to buy them (an older 12 and a Special Balladeer) HOW DARE HE SELL THEM ON ME?!

Betrayed.

Is there any hope?

Does it ever end?

Norse I know what you mean. I just can't play any acoustic guitar but my Admamas. It's strange. I have played so many very nice guitars from other manufactors, but they are not my Adamas. The Adamas just fits me, and it is the guitar I love very much....Paul Hebert

At the moment, I don't have an expensive O, just a plain old Celebrity. I also have 2 other acoustics which are now just gathering dust since I got the Celebrity. Although I don't play my music for a living, just for the enjoyment, I feel exactly the same way though - I love Ovations and I'm already thinking of getting my next one, a "real" Ovation this time around! :)

OK, just trying to keep things organized. It was established in posting on the classifieds that Moody does serial #'s & model ID, Al does relative value (along with trash removal & window cleaning), Paul Templeton is on backup for market value determination, and we still need assignment for GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) counseling. This seems to be a timely & ascendant opportunity. Do we have any volunteers, or nominations. It's gotta beat out doing colonoscopies, anyway.

You know I think you may have hit on something there Norse.
I just got finished uploading the pictures depicting my growing addiction. I've been on the wagon for almost twenty five years so this could be some binge

Perhaps this site should post the following warning:
Browsing on these boards and viewing the posted pictures has been known to cause GAS.
Symptoms may include breaking into your kids piggy bank in the middle of the night or waking up your wife by shouting out eBAY bids in your sleep.
If you experience any of these please step away from your guitar and seek professional help immediately. :D

It only makes sense to want to surround yourself with many of the things you love.

The answer is very simple

This kind of GAS addiction requires a 12 step program.

A 12 String program will cure it for sure.

I just saw a BEAUTIFUL 12 string Adamas on Ebay and I must have it!!

See how great a 12 String program works. I'm cured and I don't even know it. beeble, beeble, beeble, must have 12 string, Cluseau, you're fired. I just cut off my little finger trying to trim my strings with a dog toenail trimmer. Good thing I'm cured or I'd have to join Norsey in the institution. Why does my wife who is approaching me with a hypodermic look just like Nurse Ratchid?

Great 12 step program.

I have the fever you all do, I got it so bad I have worked there on and off for 25 years. WOW half of my life! These days I combine my Desktop Gutiarist program/ bass/piano/strings ect... and my Adamas mixing sounds and going to musical places you find on those mellow college radio stations. Play in public? No way. Who wants to see a balding old fart play? My cat don't mind.

I just like the smell when you first open the case-maybe it's the fiberglass(plastic?) or something. The other day my wife caught me with my nose in the soundhole of my Folklore.....I told her I waz trying to find the serial # - I don't think she bought it!! - Mike

Good Point made here about the smell. It's an important part of the guitar. Ovations have their own. I've recently gotten two Brazilian Collings and they have a certain smell of the Brazilian rosewood. It seems to come out when I play them. My old Nationals, when you open up the case there's that old, slightly musty smell that when you've been around it enough immediately triggers memories of Vintage guitars. Gurian guitars always had a great ceder smell because he used ceder for the kerfing.

The point is that guitars excite more of our sences than seeing, hearing and touching.

Funny you should mention that.
I've noticed that my SlotHead has a very unique smell emenating inside of it that I've never smelled from other guitars (even my other Ovations). I always thought that maybe it was the carbon/birch combination, or maybe the various woods that make up the eppaulettes.

btw: Bill, do you know/remember what woods were used for those?

One of my non Ovations is a family heirloom, a 1914 0018 Martin nylon string. I've been known to just sit with my nose in the soundhole and enjoy the smell of old, aged wood.

Hey Paul,

Is that the guitar or your lap that you're smelling?

You know anything with Birch smell is going to bring back some memories as I worked in Ohio sawmills and birch was common, what a great smell when we sawed a birch log. They used to have these birchbark Indian canoes (souvenier sized) and they smelled GREAT, when I smoked a pipe I had some birch ones that stood out, that was some of the hardest things I gave up when I quit smoking. I had over 50 pipes, some great examples of wood excellence.
