Just had a friend come into work with a Fender squire strat that his daughter bought, used for one day, put a small nick in, and decided to sell. $40.00 later, it's mine...with a gig bag. It's blue, but I was wondering if it is worth disassembling and refinishing in natural. For all I know it could be made up of laminated 2x4's Does anyone know what wood they used for this animal?

Everybody else go away. (whispering) Jim, I've got a Squier Affinity Strat in natural, and it looks really good. Much better than it sounds.

I've got the same guitar...bought it for my daughter a couple of years ago. She played it a little, but never really got the itch.

Personally, I wouldn't strip it down. I can't imagine the wood on those is worth looking at.

I don't know, it's got to be better than that bright blue. Maybe some woodgrain contact paper......

I believe it's Alder for the body and maple for the neck.

Good get! I think we've established that this is a pretty open-minded group about guitars in general...with a distinct leaning towards Ovations and away from a couple specific over-hyped brands.

That said, I like my little Mexi-strat in all-occasion black. Makes me look thinner!

Learn to like blue and don't take it out in public. It's probably a $100 guitar new. I've seen lots of guitars that I think are ugly, but other people thought they were cool because some rock star played something like it.

Do it because you want to.
Do it because it will keep you off the street. Just don't do it make money or even break even.
Good get, though.

I am going to take it apart tomorrow. I took some pics of the before. If the after turns out, I will share them. (I might add a deep bowl to it and some epaulets with lizzard fur inlays)

I picked up a Strat body, trem bridge and neck as separates and will be playing with that. I like the material finish idea for my daughter.

Have fun, play loud!

Put some good p/ups on it and you'll think you got a custom shop.

The wood in your Squier could also be basswood. I've seen both it and alder mentioned on Fender BBs when talking about Squiers. I have a recent CIJ '62 reissue with a body made of basswood, and the sound is fine...there is no issue with the wood type.

Strat bodies are often picked to be painted at the factory because the wood isn't attractive...but, hey, give it a try!

Hey...I bought a Norinco MAK-90 (AK-47) knock-off about 15 years ago. Had an ugly yellow varnish on it (really ugly). Stripped and sanded it down to find a decent piece of walnut which I then hand rubbed with Linseed Oil.

Now it looks like a cheap Russian knockoff of an AK-47, but believe me...much better than what I thought would be under there. Maybe I will spray paint it in a camo color at some point.

You can always re-paint it (maybe in a camo scheme like my MAK-90)?

Seriously, I thought I would sand it down and if the wood doesn't look good in a natural condition, I would use a stain, possibly black walnut or a dark cherry. (shades of SG?) Anyhow, it's all disassembled now, (it didn't take long) and I will start on it tomorrow on lunch. (who needs to eat) I really liked the link to the decopauge' project, but thats a litle much for me. Lizard fur???

You don't have to go with the lizards. I'll bet a local fabric store has something with Billy the Marlin on it.

Who would want to put Ricky Martin on their guitar?

Anywho, I showed that tutorial to my Daughter last night and got her thinking fabrics, prints and such. You could even use Stephen28's Wallpaper!
