I've seen him a few times, solo and with John Hiatt. Great tone, incredible playing. Just got a Hiatt DVD from an '88 German tour when he was using Sonny and the Goners as his backing band.

Missed seeing him at The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI in July....went the night of the show without tickets and found a line around the block, sold out. Won't make that mistake again next time he's back......

Sonny is great, the real deal. His CD "South of I-10" is a classic.

F@#king awesome
Well put. Saw him with John Hiatt and the Goners last year ... from about 15 feet away. Jimi Buffet came out and did a couple of tunes with them ... but I'm no Parrotthead so I would've preferred some more of the real stuff.

Got to enjoy Sonny last year with my daushter and her husband.. He played a strat, with a Marshall stack. I remember commenting to my daughter, that, when I saw Hendrix with the Experience, Jimi played a strat, with a Marshall stack. Things haven't changed much in 38 years.

I was 6 feet away. What he does with his right hand is unbelievable! muting with the index and middle, thumping with the thumb on the A string with the melody and doing a trill on the E string with the ring finger, of course all the time fingering behind the slide. He told me after the show he does about 100 gigs a year(200 days on the road) and about 30 with Buffet. Says he's great to work for and has more and more great people with him. I guess it's like John Jorgenson taking the gig with Elton John. Sonny says he doesn't want too many with Buffet, afraid he'll loose his edge staying in the 5 star hotels and restaurants etc. Still, I'll skip the Buffet gigs. Buffet's OK in a fish shack restaurant in Florida but that's about it for me.
Also amazing was his bass player who's been with him forever. Played a 56 P bass with a pick all night. Sonny had his 2 road strats and his pedals and borrowed a Marshall combo from the store next door. They used the house drums. He said they're trying to travel lighter and lighter these days with the way airlines are. Nuff said on that.

Great insight on Sonny. I like the quote... Buffet's OK in a fish shack restaurant in Florida but that's about it for me. This guy is all about the guitar. Thanks for bringing him to the attention on the OFC.
