Singing his iconic hit.

Hang it up, Don. Suck doesn't begin to cover it.

Some guys just can't quit. For some reason they've been playing Pie on the radio recently. While it made a statement and had tremendous impact when it came out, listening to it now it sounds kinda crude, not professional (reference the thread on Air Supply)
Just an observation, still a pretty good song but needs somebody to cover it.

I didn't stay that long to see Don.....Bonnie Raitt was good, though.

Strange the contrast between talent; Knopfler, Emmy Lou, Bonnie Raitt, John Hyatt, all of similar age, were quite good, doing great tunes.
I like American Pie just as much as the next guy, but in the midst of these other great performers, McLean made it sound like stale Wonder bread.

The idea of a cover is an interesting one, Bill.

I always thought the stuff on his "Tapestry" album was his best. I remember I was a HS soph when "Pie" came out, and thought it was phenomenal. It's a highly requested song at gigs, and we do it quite often. It's fun having a bunch of drunks all sing the choruses like the Mormon Tubercular Choir. We usually f@ck w/the lyrics, t'see if anybody catches it:
". . and the 3 men I admire most . . Moe,Larry,Curly and the HolyGhost . ."
Rick remains amazed that I know all of the lyrics by heart (but then I thought EVERYONE did).

Don did some good stuff, then he got stuck in that "Hank Williams"-phase, and just never progressed . . .

That's funny, Cliff. I was going to give Donny some credit for remembering all the lyrics... but instead, since you mention it, I think he woulda benefited from a little audience participation.

As I sat down to the keyboard...American Pie is on the radio..right now.
When it first came out a local radio station passed out lyric sheets with the meaning behind of each phrase and verse of American Pie.

We had the "cool" English teacher that year who devoted a week's worth of classes disecting the lyrics . . .

The only thing that Madonna can "cover" nowadays is a fire hydrant.

I never cared for American Pie that much, but would love to learn Castles in the Air, Vincent or And I Love You So. I'm working on the last one off and on.

My 14-year old son plays that song over and over. It was an album that was on his XMAS list this past year. I think it's getting played a lot because middle- and high-school kids seem to be really into it ... not unlike those of us who were that age when it first came out. For what it was, it really was.

It sure must be a drag to be hawking your music on late night informercials like DM has been doing lately. BUT ... he does have his own signature Martin!

I wonder how your son interputes the lyrics.
Let's see if I can remember..

And as Lennon read a book on Marx (John Lennon & politics)
The quartet practiced in the park (Beatles at Shea Stadium)
And we sang dirges in the dark (Robert Kennedy killed)
The day the music died.
,
,
I met at girl who sang the blues...I asked her for some happy news....she just smiled and turned away. (Janis Joplin)
I went down to the sacred store (Filmore West) where I heard the music year before but the man there (Bill Grahm) said the music wouldn't play.
And in the streets the children screamed (the Mai-Lia massacure) the poets cried and the lover dreamed.
,
,
And there we were all in one place (woodstock) a generation lost in space with no time left to start again.
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack Flash (Mick Jagger) sat on a candle stick because fire is the devil's (as in "sympathy for") only friend.
And as I watched them on the stage (Hell's Angles at Altamont) my hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angle born in hell...could break that satan spell. And as the flames climbed high into the night to light the sacrificial rite (the killing of an audience member) I saw satan (Jagger or the devil??) laughing with delite the day the music died.
