| Thanks to everyone that responded to my last post.
I was curious if anyone could tell me what kind of a finish Ovation puts on their soundboards? Is it polyurethane? My 1621-4 was made in 1976 and looks like it just came out of the music store; fantastic!! Does the finish darken with age? I have a natural finish, but it is a beautiful darker tone of natural, and my last question... what does the "4" mean on the model #: 1621-4? Once again, thanks to everyone. |

Location: Upper Left USA | Yes to Polyurethane finish, compatible with Cyano glues but that's about all.
The Woods underneath the finish do mature as their character determines.
The -4 are Natural, yes. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Back then it was more of a Polyester with a little urethane added to prevent cracking. The straight polyester was great for sound but very brittle and would cold check. We used a 70/30 mix and that worked much better.
They still were thick finishes, I like the thin ones they're using now much better. |

Location: SoCal | The old finishes darken with time, like the wood underneath. I had a Deluxe Balladeer that went back to the factory and had the top refinished, stripping off the old finish and putting on new. The top went from a dark golden brown to a lighter honey brown. It was beautiful. That guitar is now in Germany.... |
