I stumbled across this thread in a search Mystery Ovation Amp from 1970 where I point out...

We've all seen and unearthed some RARE Ovation gear over the past few years, but what's up with the PA, Guitar and Bass gear. Where is it hiding? I'm assuming they made at least a few hundred of each model... is that a poor assumption? It hit the catalogs anyway.

My curiosity stems from the fact that we have really turned up some rare pieces like the Slotheads, Bluebirds, Blue Breadwinners, PF-22's, Jerry Reed Thunderhead, Boston Double-Neck Preacher, etc etc etc.. Where is the elecronic gear all hiding? I have one microphone that is not actually branded Ovation, but the same model. I have several Amps, that I have found, but it took a lot of work, and I have not seen any others. I occationally see "parts" of amps, speaker cabs and such on ebay, but it's easier to find a mint GP or PF-22 than an Ovation amp.
Well here it is over 6 years of eBay and Craigslist later... and the above statement is still true. When I asked a knowledgable gas station owner once about how many amps were made, the term he used was I believe "a crapload."

We have seen everything for the common items to the rarest of the rare, but still, for the most part.. Ovation Amps, of which there were at least a few 1000 made, are essentially no where to be found. I have a Rockman 500 (actually I'm currently selling it on eBay) of which less than 50 were made. I only mention this as it's another case of a niche piece of gear, extremely rare, and I've seen two of them on eBay over the years. Back to Ovation.... GPS-1's show up every couple of months, and we've even seen a couple of Slotheads on eBay... but of all the amps, mics, speaker cabs etc... only a handful have ever made it to ebay.

Well I just thought I would bring this discussion back for the fun of it.

Ok.. so here's a giggle..

I just checked and there are ad's for Ovation amps and even the Footswitches (which are proprietary) for the amps that have sold recently, but no actual amps.

Things that make ya go HUH?

Here\'s
one... With a Footswitch!

But you gotta pick it up in Pittsburgh.
I looks like it might go cheap... You might be able to talk them into shipping.

That's the only loaded cabinet of that style I have seen, besides in the catalog. I have a couple of those amps. Pretty cool... but just the tip of the iceberg on what must be out there.

I was just over at OvationTribute looking up amp catalogs and I had forgot all about the KMD amps too.. I would assume they show up from time to time, but I can't say I've ever really looked for them. Although as I recall, they were nice amps.

Beal, what was the deal on the KMD amps? Did Ovation build them, or were they sourced to Korea... yeah...i know... do a search..

..... few minutes later...
So I do a search and there are a few KMD amps on eBay all stating "Made in England" but on at least one of the photos of the back of an amp it clearly sais "Made in Korea"

An IC-100 with a cabinet was offered for sale on the local Craig's list a couple of months ago. Seller was asking $85 for it with a cabinet. It didn't sell, and then he relisted it for $125, and I think it still went unsold.

ok.. didn't even know Applause made amps.. so YES it counts!!!

For those that may not realize, they had a rather extensive amplification product line. Guitar, Bass and Keyboard amps, PA systems, Portable systems, Combo's, stacks and even Microphones.

To put some additional perspective, I have been looking for this stuff for over 10 years now. I don't think I have seen more than 20 Ovation amps in all that time and that INCLUDES the 10 or so that I have.

I had a KMD amp here in the shop a few years ago. TWICE. I sold it to a fellow who must've had money problems, because a few months later I spotted it at a pawn shop. So of course I bought it and wound up selling it again. It was a very nice amp and when I found out the guy who bought it the second time decided to give up playing guitar, I was hoping he'd sell it back to me. Didn't happen though. I think he gave it to a nephew in Nebraska. If I ever find it again, or any other Ovation amps, I'll let you know.

Thanks Alison. I have several and recently went through a noted any issues that need to be addressed. I also have plenty of parts including NOS chassis, NOS Speakers, empty cabinets and such.

The Ovation amps are, like all other Ovation items VERY under-rated. They were not cheap, nor were they inexpensive. Quite the opposite. Built like tanks and with a price tag to match. Very warm sounding amps in general.

I don't really need to collect them as much anymore, just more of a curiousity as to where they all ended up.

Just coincidentally, I saw a KMD cabinet on Boise Craigslist just now for $35 and got all excited. Then I read the ad and saw that all the speakers had been removed. Anyone want an empty KMD cabinet?

I have a "Cat" preamp and footswitch like the ebay posting. No amp/cab. Mine came from ebay purchases ~3-4 years ago.

~1984 I bought a 100W "Guitar-Dude" with 15" speaker, it had been abandonded at a repair shop. I loaned it to a girlfriend for her son to use, never got it back.

I knew you were the last one to need or want another speaker cabinet, Miles. I would like one of those Dude amps, though. I only have 3 amps that I never use.

That Horn-Tweeter looks like it was made by University Sound , I can n`t make out what woofers were employed , but If them were University as well , and since KUSTOM was in favor of using UNIVERSITY / ALTEC speakers , then I wonder if Ovation amps. were build by KUSTOM ??

Vic

.. a little confused here , since I`ve never heard of KUSTOM mfg. building under a different label ..
