Tone only test, everybody voted on which pick they thought produced the best tone when I strummed/struck individual notes on a Takamine EF75J amplified thru a Genz-Benz Shen100. The choices were: 1. Genuine tortoise 2. Blue Chip 3. Read Bear 4. Pearse Tortex 5. D'Andrea Pro plec 6. Fender cellulose 7. Dunlop nylon or Delrin, can't remember exactly 2, 3 and 4 are made from cellulose, each company with a (supposedly) proprietary formulation/process, and are supposed to be the closest thing to genuine tortoise that chemists can synthesize ona large scale. Cost: 1. Unavailable/illegal for sale, you pretty much have to happen across one at a garage sale (or know someone who knows someone, then pay a king's ransom). 2. $30-40 (yes, that's each) 3. $20-30 ditto 4. $2-4 each 5. ~$7/dozen 6. pennies or less 7. pennies or less The verdict: Round 1: 6 & 7 fell out. Round 2: 2 & 3 fell out. Round 3: 1 was considered "best" by the majority, with 4 and 5 pretty much tied.

Do you hold the turtle by the flipper and strum the guitar with the shell, or hold it by the shell and use the flippers? Is it better to use a big turtle and cut the shell down, or do you get one of the babies and use the whole shell?
