We've got a large diaphragm condenser which sounds pretty good, but the wide pattern picks up the guitar as well as the vocals. Plus, it picks up the neighbor's dog and kids playing outside.

Would a small diaphragm condenser instrument mic be suitable for vocals and provide better isolation?

not really

small condensers are typically used for miking acoustic guitars or stringed instruments. They are generally the best choice where you want a solid, wide frequency response and the best transient response.

Large diaphragm microphones are generally the choice for studio vocals. Get one with directional patterns and you can set it to the one that works best in you situation.

Fly ,

It is not so much a matter of small vs. large capsules , although Stephen has a point , yet , there are so many other factors that play a significant role.

Mic.s see a pattern .. Super-cardioid .. cardioid .. Omni-directional .. figure-eight , to name but a few .. also .. Mic. to Subject distance.

Now , instead of starting a debate about Mic.s in general , I`d rather adress yer li`ll problem.

As I see it , you `re looking fer a mic. that :

Picks up micro-detail

Has a reasonable broad sweet spot

Can withstand some abuse

Used for BOTH Vocal and Acoustic instruments

Drops of Rapidly in sensitivity .. ( being away say a seven ft. or so it will hardly pick up anythiing )

For me the answer was :

My Mic. of preference , a truly Universal Mic. , it can do anything ( short of making coffee ) , the Wonderful .. AKG model C 535 EB .., which is a small capsule ( 1" ) Condensor Mic. , being a STAGE mic. , of Studio quality !!

Overhere it sports a price-tag of 390 Usd , a little pricey perhaps , but consider this , it can be used as a Vocal/ Acoustic-Instrument mic. BOTH on Stage and Recording Studio , all with Utmost quality !!

Having a decent array of mic.s to compare with,

Studio :

M-AUDIO model LUNA
Studio-Projects mod. TB-1 ( Tube-Condensor ) incl. DJ-8 power supply
.. an assortment of Matched pairs , Large and small condensors.

Stage :

AKG C 900
Audix
Shure SM 58
Prodipe MC-1
PEAVY pvm 22 diamond ( my favorite vocal mic. )

.. that WONDERFUL AKG C 535 EB , ..
..can be used Everywhere , what would take several mic.s to do , ( one fer Vocal-stage .. one fer Vocal - Rec. .. , one fer Acoustic )
.. the C 535 EB can do it all.

So You would be Saving money :)

Do not take my word for it , try fer yerself ...

Vic, thanks for the suggestion. Multiple applications is critical if I'm going to spend money.
