Well, now that cold weather is REALLY here, we've got some gigs coming up where the guitars may sit in a cold car trunk for quite a while. So I'm wondering...how susceptible are recent Ovation finishes to finish crazing when a cold guitar is suddenly exposed to warm air? I've heard horror stories of old Les Pauls that were brought in from the car, taken out of the case, and suddenly that nice gold top finish is covered with tiny cracks...

I try to let the guitars sit inside in the case for a while before taking them out, so they will warm up a little slower, but there may be occasions when I won't have that luxury. (Specifically, it'd be my '97 VXT and '91 1868 Elite)

OOPS, brain fart, I'm stuck in the 90's.

Make that a 2007.

Is Bill Clinton still President?

If you can't avoid the rapid temperature change, then you can't avoid finish cracks. YMMV... it's not if it will happen, it's when it will happen. The wood and finish have different rates of change. Using the case as a buffer for an hour usually works.

They do make a "space blanket" type case cover for guitars. It looks like aluminum foil. Don't know how well it works but what I would do is try to bring the guitar to the gig site earlier in the day, if there's someone there who can keep an eye on it for you.

Why do they have to sit out in the cold?
On practice day I bring mine into the office.
If I hit the gym before practice I take it in and store it behind the desk. That costs me a dollar tip, but it's worth it.

I'd dread starting a gig with a cold guitar. Even an Ovation would go in and out of tune until it warmed up.

And this case will match the aluminum foil hat too!

I found it convenient just to leave an extra guitar in the bandroom at the practice site. It stays warm, humidified and secure year round, I have keys, and the guitar serves as a readily available backup in the event something goes wrong with the primary guitars (which has never happened in four years).

Miguel, I think he's talking about a guitar, not a banjo. :D
