Since the advent of eBay there are many people looking for hifis and guitars they can flip- most of the good stuff goes early. I'm too lazy to get up early just to pile up more stuff I'll never get around to selling. -Steve W.

Walk over and give him a beer (or whatever his thing is) and say Thank You! After a few years, you'll be even.

She wanted a sax, which isn't as readily and cheaply available. One day at a yard sale I bought a $10 clarinet and in the conversation, the guy pointed out he had just sold an old sax to a young girl standing there. I asked her about it and she said she was going to try to get her mother to buy it for her so they had set it aside. I asked if she was sure, so she called her mother... who refused to buy it. So I forked over the $25. It was old and musty, etc. I know nothing about saxes but it turned out to be a 1950 Conn 28M Connstellation. She lost interest so it sat in the case until last year. I sold it on ebay for just under $1800 and that money helped her with her first year of college.

When SWMBO has them, I leave and she sells my stuff, like all my classic cassettes of Kenny Loggins, John Denver and Simon and Garfunkel. Caravan Rubbish bought them all for $5.

At that time, I was just a beginner and felt the banjo belonged in better hands than mine, so Pops sold it to "cousin" Dave. Dave got it for a good price, and Pops made a little money, and I could kick myself now for not accepting it, but Dave is a much better banjo player than I'll ever be, so it's just as well. | I have a guitar student who bought a nice early 70's Washburn for fifty bucks. I also bought a Gibson B25 for 35 bucks once, but it wasn't a yard sale. Guy had an ad in the paper and I thought it must be a mis-print. I called and he said it wasn't a mis-print but someone was already on the way. I asked for directions and then drove like a maniac, but I got there first, so I bought it. Mostly I just buy books. But I do love yardsales. I just can't see paying full price for new when you can pay a TINY fraction of the price for used. And besides, you never know what kind of interesting stuff you might find. Yeah, it's junk, but it's NEAT junk. |

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 12761 Location: Boise, Idaho We might still have our Carpenter lps. SWMBO thought we didn't have a cassette player when she sold our cassettes, even though it sits between the receiver and the cd player that she uses most every day. She knew we have a turntable because she dusts it. That's how she broke the stylus that I replaced when I got the seeing eye dog lp. | We sold a bunch of our lps at a white elephant auction once, though. Some kid asked what records were and her dad told her they were "big cds". She was the only bidder and got them. Karen might be in there, but the kid probably never figured out how to play them. Iz was sure a big guy. Probably died of heart failure. He dwarfed that uke. Maybe I should get lanaki to translate some of the songs on his cd. |

Joined: January 2006 Posts: 1487 Location: Michigan about ten years ago my home stereo cassette player broke so i went to abc appliance and best buy to replace it.in both places the sales kid looked at me like i had 4 eyeballs and said i dont think that we sell those anymore.i dont know which store it was but they had one left so i bought it. | now what i dont understand is if i am so out of style buying a cassette player than why are turntables becoming a sought after item and the prices on some are into the thousands  go figure.GWB |

Joined: January 2002 Posts: 970 Location: Atlanta,Ga. Record albums are definately back in and good vintage turntables are going for pretty high prices..Even Marantz and McIntosh are making turntables again..I was reading somewhere on the net that they pressed about 1.5 million more albums this year over last year..They also mentioned that teenagers are discovering LP's and listening to vinyl. They are discovering what they missed and buying turntables and albums. They went on to say that records will outlive the CD due mostly to internet downloading and reduced CD sales. | Here is a pic of a current Marantz turntable that i bought recently. After about 25 years they released a turntable again.Looks a bit strange but sounds great. ![]() |

Joined: August 2009 Posts: 197 Location: Pennsylvania I picked up a turntable last year for $10....and plays 78's. Most that are made these days don't. I still have my stero I bought in high school. But it's bulkier and the power button doesn't work properly. Only way to run the radio and the CD player I attached to it is to power up the turntable. Now I only need the 'new' turntable to play the collection of 78's I got from the folks....some of them old originals like Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer". | I don't have much time for garage sales these days, but they are a wonderful way to recycle. One persons junk is another persons treasure. I furnished my first apartment almost entirely with great quality garage sale finds. |
