Joined: February 2012 Posts: 10 Location: Austin, Texas | I received a new Ovation a couple of weeks ago and I'm trying to find some info on it. I know it is a CS257 but that's pretty much it. I would like to know wood composition/possible dating/anything related to this guitar would be awesome. I have found things that I think might be right but I would like some confirmation on my findings. I am also having a hard time trying to find out what kind of finish I have. It is a very nice green but has a subtle sunburst that, instead of being black, its blue around the edges. Any and all info would be much appreciated! Here's a link of the guitar - http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p558/Gsalazar26/DayIgotJewelMar... and the logo - http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p558/Gsalazar26/CelebrityDeluxe... P.S. It probably wouldn't help seeing as its an offshore Ovation, but the serial # is 9016909 and my label is blue and green in color Thanks in advance. -George Edited by Gsalazar26 2012-04-13 12:13 AM

If Ovation follows the wood naming practice I've seen other guitar makers use - just saying spruce or maple implies it is a laminate. Maybe someone else can give you more information. BTW - here is a Youtube video of one being played. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahs041LSsF8 . Edited by Bradley 2012-04-13 12:48 AM

So I conclude the top is spruce, and the other info is right. Edited by Leo 2012-04-13 9:06 PM

Joined: February 2012 Posts: 10 Location: Austin, Texas | Hi everybody! Thanks a lot for all the help that has been provided. Just to add some other things that I found out: I have an OP 24+ and Quintad bracing. Someone told me that the tuners might be 24k gold! I highly doubt this as I'm pretty sure its plated, but just to double check this isn't true right?? The main thing (other than the date) that I'm extremely curious about is the finish. Leo, I've looked at the FGB color before and the outer color is black, mine is a blue-ish color fading into the green. Plus the FGB color that I have seen is really only found on the quilted maple tops. I wish mine was quilted, but the laminate tops works great for my ear. I have looked at some old catalogs looking at every CS257 from French to Japanese catalogs and based on the pre-amp I have, I'm fairly sure my 257 is pre-2000. Also, I have seen mixed listings of the nato neck and a mahogany neck with a walnut headstock. The latter are the guitars pre-2000. Anything after had the nato necks. I'm not entirely sure, but I saw these on some catalogs. -George

Joined: February 2012 Posts: 10 Location: Austin, Texas | Forgot one thing that I haven't mentioned: I have fallen in love with Ovations, so when I got the chance for a free one, I jumped at the chance! This guitar is my second (I bought my first december of '10) and the reason that it was free was because the original owner had an "accident" and the neck broke. They tried repairing it and they ruined it even more! I convinced the owner that a lot of work would have to be put into repairing the guitar (I have been an active guitar technician for the past 6 years, check out my website if you are in the Austin area! http://www.gandbguitars.com/). The guy decided to literally THROW THE GUITAR IN THE TRASH. This sent shivers down my spine... I offered to buy it, but he just gave it to me for free. So.. I got the neck off, very small wood damage, got the clamps I need to compensate for the bowl. Now I'm just waiting when I got time away from my clients and a good day. Any and all tips would be appreciated! Maybe I'll post some pics of the work soon. -George
