My buddy just bought the 1778TX and he says that he loves how it sounds when not plugged in. The problem is that he is not too happy with the sound when it is plugged in. Could this be that the stock preamp just isn't that good and maybe an upgrade is in order? I have an extra iDea preamp. He isn't interested in the recorder part of it, but is curious if the sound would be improved enough to buy it?

Thanks.

I can vouch that it's not the stock preamp, which is the OP PRO, which is in my opinion the best preamp I've heard! I even had them put one in the custom Adamas I won last year to make sure it had the best sound. Maybe he got a bad one (or has a low battery - they do sound horrible when the battery is about to die, but the preamp itself is the best!). Of course, just as important as the preamp is whatever he is plugging it into, though I get a great tone straight into a mixer as well as through a PA.

What is the preamp built in that guitar? As you can see in my signature, I have a lot of guitars and the old ones are all upgrated by myself to the newest generation, the OP-Pro-Series. They are are all sounding different, but not in that way that you think you have another guitar. But it is an interesting thing to find out what is the best preamp for the guitar.

Yes, the 1778TX (as well as the 1868TX) come with the OP-PRO (at least, they did last year). That's why I'm wondering if your friend might have a bad preamp, or a low battery.

If you live close to each other, just take over your iDea and plug it into the OP Pro can. The OP Pro should not sound worse than the iDea. I have both and haven't notice a significant difference in sound when I switch them.

All of the Op-Pro series preamps sound great. We've got various guitars/preamps in the family ranging from the Op30 to the OpPro to the VIP to the IDEA and used to have an OpPro Studio. They have subtle differences but all are great.

The iDea is the one version which to my ear lags a bit. I think with some tweaking it might be ok, but just run at flat eq I don't like it. So I will be surprised if your iDea sounds better than a stock OpPro.

As Jukebox Joe said, it matters a lot what it is plugged into. Is he using an acoustic amp or a regular electric guitar amp? An acoustic amp will sound tons better.

I usually run the eq fairly flat on the preamp, pulling down the mids just a touch. Then I tweak the eq on the amp or mixer. With everything flat to begin with it sounds ok, so really his guitar should sound pretty darned good with any Ovation preamp run into an acoustic amp or PA system.
