So I went to New Hartford today to drop off my damaged 2001-X Redwood Ovation, but there was an ulterior motive: Look what was waiting for me!

This guitar took a very long and winding road to come to be. It began as a beautiful Custom Elite that I sold in a moment of weakness and got damaged while shipping. I was originally going to put this neck on a deep bowl guitar with a fantastic quilted maple top, but an oversight led to this neck not fitting properly. So the neck got shelved for nearly a year until John Budny and I could come up with this!

I owe a special thanks to luthier Harvey Leach for allowing me to purloin a piece of AAAAA-Grade koa from his personal stash. And boy did he come through in spades! The flame is mesmerizing. The tone is lovely. The overall effect is spectacular!

The guitar has a very brassy sound with lots of zing backed by very good bass response. As I had hoped, it sounds completely different from every other Ovation I own. The set up is flawless. The OP-Pro Studio pre-amp is my favorite for a reason. And just in case you can't tell......

I'm quite pleased with this guitar!

Once again; many, MANY thanks to everyone in New Hartford!

Patch- this is a beautiful guitar and I am sure sounds fantastic.
JB and luthiers did a goog job! Congratulations on this great custom guitar project. Now, I feel like sending my 78 CL for a rejuventing setup.
So, New Hartford did it again.

Good catch on the buttons SOBeach. I got them from Al; some of his super nice rosewood buttons to match the fretboard.

I'm sure it'll sound awesome in about 5 years... Koa really impresses me after it opens up some.

You should get mother's little helpers to put a koa veneer on the headstock. That would totally complete the look.

Gotta agree....body looks fantastic but a mismatched headstock.

but who cares as long as it sounds as good as it looks.

I thought about the re-doing the headstock, but it was more effort, not to mention expense, than it was worth. I even toyed with the idea of putting a faux koa TRC there, but eventually decided the burst finish was good enough.

Pure beauty!

Does that fretboard "float" like a 1537?

If I have to ever sell a beautiful guitar (like this one) - or even an ugly one - I want Patch to take the pictures for me.

Ha ha ha... Just said that because it's an oximoron. I STILL wish they could do something other-than-white with the binding on a nice wood-topped guitar with inlay.

I'm with you Vince. I typically don't get the white binding, but I had to match the binding on the original neck. I asked if they could rebind the neck with walnut, but they said it would tear up the abalone lining the fretboard. I have several wood O's with either tortoise or walnut binding around the abalone, and they look great I think.

As far as the floating fretboard goes, I don't know. I'll check when I get a chance.

Also after careful consideration, I've also decided I kind of like the headstock. If I couldn't get it redone, I prefer the burst finish with the koa to a natural one for example. Still, I admit to a bit of bias in this case.
