Hi all,

I'm hoping to get some advice on which Ovation to look at buying. I know that sound is very much a personal thing, but thought I might get some advice based on the type of music I play and feel I like.

Most of my guitar playing days have been focused around hard rock and heavy metal (big influences from Iron Maiden, Metallica, Nirvana, Alice n Chains etc) on a Les Paul.

I've used my old acoustic for song writing but love to play general hard rock, heavy metal and alternate music on it.

I do like the look of the multi hole acoustics and the sound of the deep bowl. I also like the idea of a more "electric guitar" style neck for ease of play.

What recommendations would people have around an Ovation for playing this type of music?

Not a multi-hole, but my 1617-4 legend has a VERY slim, fast neck. Great acoustic sound. The 07C maybe fits your bill more, it too is fast and comfortable.

The '05 Collectors also has really nice slim, glossed neck.

Aussie, that's the kinda stuff I do too.

Most the Os do a pretty good job for us electric players, at least most the USA built ones do. Don't have any exp with the new AX/TX stuff though.

I have a friend that pays a lot of rock, runs a pretty extrensive pedal array, and his go-to is an Elite Special. He always sounds great, whether he's using electric-style effects or playing acoustic. BTW what O models does Tom Scholz play?

Thanks everyone, this has been really helpful.

I've just starting looking and was drawn to the Custom Elite 2078AX, but this was purely based on looks and also the sounds bites that one of the websites posted comparing the various sounds of the guitar models (mind you its really hard to tell doing this but all i've got to go on).

I noticed that the AX model has the slightly better pre amp with the Op-Pro Studio with XLR, which was appealing.

Would love a USA built O but price range makes it hard, plus they are hard to get in Aus brand new.

Hi Aussie

Pro Audio in Canberra have a couple of new Elite AXs. Check out eBay.

Both under $1k.

Just an idea.

Thanks Banjo, just had a look.

Nice spotting! :-) The only difference is the colour (i really like the RTD but can't be too picky) and also this doesn't have the Studio Pro with XLR (not sure if that's worth having) and the top is AA where as the one in the US has AAA solid spruce top (not sure what the difference is).

Hi Aussie.

Why do you need the XLR?

At the risk of stating the obvious, AAA is a slightly higher grade than AA, but I don't know difference it makes in practice.
