I'm doing a one song performance next weekend and the song I'm doing starts with just me singing with the acoustic.  After the first verse and chorus, I want some simple bass and drums to kick in on a backing track.

I've got a 10 button MIDI foot controller hooked up to my iPad and a 'looping' app (Loopy). I COULD use Loopy, but I don't need a looper for this song.

So, I was wondering if anyone else uses a different technique or app to do this? Any suggestions?

I thought about using a metronome or click track for the first part of the backing track, but me and click tracks don't see eye to eye, and metronomes HATE me.

Prerecord your tracks into loopy, and then just trigger it when you need it? How would you typically get the backing tracks recorded in the first place?

If you can use your midi pedal to set the tempo (tap) then a looper is the perfect tool to use. Set the tempo while you're playing, then fire off the loop.
Using a backing track, you always run the risk of being at the wrong tempo when it kicks in.
Embarrassing... and strangely difficult to recover from.

DWG, I haven't figured that out yet. Probably find a prerecorded Karaoke MP3 and cut out the bit where it's just me.

Waskel, that's exactly what I'm worried about. I thought about maybe have the first bit playing quietly so only I can hear it then have the volume come up 'when the band kicks in'.

The more I think about it, the more I think I'll do it without a backing track. The 'performance' won't be as dynamic, but less chance of fluffing summink.

You could have an ear piece, play along with the backing track through that and then trigger the backing track to go to the speakers via a foot switch.

I've worked out how I'm going to do it.

I've put the backing track into a DAW and panned the beginning guitar and vocals to the left and the later 'band' stuff to the right.

Export the mixdown to MP3 and import it into 'Big Button' for playback.

Put an earbud from the interface into my left ear and run the right channel to the PA.

Tried it last night and it worked OK except the earbud annoyed me after I no longer needed it. Solution; step away from the mic and it pulls it out.

Still open to any other suggestions tho.

Good work! Make sure the ear bud doesn't flop down on your strings or tangle your hand or something stupid that will turn your face red.
