| Hello all!
I have a couple months before I buy and wanted to know if someone with minimal playing time on a guitar is able to learn on a 12 string or should they start out on a 6 string? My end goal is to play with praise and worship for our church (shortage of acoustic guitar players). I have a strong music background as I have played saxaphone and sang in a group that toured around the US (nothing major, a college PR group), and the likes. BUT my background doesn't mean bup-kiss as I have no guitar background. Just love the sound of the 12 string, but not sure if it is good to jump right to that, or if it is even a good guitar for P&W?
I did a search and went through 14 pages and did not find a question like this, so I apologize if this is a duplicate.
Thanks in advance for your help! Who would have thought there would be a forum for Ovation lovers?!? Made my day that I found you (yes, this could be considered brown nosing...)

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | I admit that my first guitar was a 6-string, but can honestly say I learned to play on a 12-string. I bought my first 12er less than a year after I started playing. I still have my trusty Custtom Balladeer too. It's going nowhere.
The only real advice I can give if you go the 12-string route is to make sure you have an excellent set-up. My 12-strings play effortlessy, but I've picked up others that were true finger-breakers.
Ovation, especially USA-made, 12-strings are some of the best ever made. Have fun with the new toy, whichever you choose. |

Jeffrey, if you are starting I'd go with a quality Six string and learn the basics. It can all be duplicated on the 12 but you have to learn the "How's" first.
If you stick with it and become a guitar player you will end up with a six, a twelve, a Baritone, a short scale, etc. |
