Joined: September 2013 Posts: 52 Location: Brisbane Australia | Hi all, I am new to Ovation guitars and the forum. I haven't seen all that many in my part of the world, being Queensland Australia. I am not really an acoustic player so the Ovations have never been that high on my list of 'must try that guitar out'. However after seeing a few piccies of some wonderful Deacons, Breadwinners and UKs recently it has rekindled my interest from many year ago (the '80s if I recall correctly!), particularly in a Deacon. I've never seen one for sale (in Australia) until recently, and I have never had the chance to play one. It had slipped down my list of 'one day' guitars until now, so I thought I should get some opinions on electric ovations in general, and the Deacon specifically if you would be so kind to share your knowledge ![]() Also if anyone has one (electric Ovation) they would part with (keeping in mind I am in Australia, so shipping can be an issue) I would be interested in having a chat about what it is and how it plays. I play "covers" (Rock, Pop, Blues and Country) and a little original 'indie' stuff. Basically I love MIJ guitars from the late '70s and '80s as well as most guitars that are under-appreciated (so sell for realistic prices) and quirky. I recently bought a Peavey T60 and loving it ![]() I build guitars and assemble partscasters so I am looking to learn from whatever it is I buy as well as gain a guitar that inspires me (at least a little). So it perplexes me that Ovations have gone under my radar for so long, as they seem to be full of innovation and 'quirks'! ![]() ![]()

I've upgraded your membership so you can move about the site and post at will. I'm one of the bigger proponents of the O solidbodies as it was the electrics that introduced me to the brand, and you've heard my voice already. There are only a few people that can respond in this section (it's limited to "Newbie Greeters" and moderators) so be sure to go ask your questions in the other sections. Also, we have an entire section devoted to you upside down people. And yes, there are some solid bodies floating around down there (even 1 or 2 that used to be mine including a PF22 which any T60 fan should have a try at). You may have to pry them from Jim's hands though. The positive is it's much easier to get a solidbody shipped there than an acoustic, so best of luck. Oh, and you should definitely consider the Viper (think Tele on steroids) and the last sorta solidbody effort, the VXT, a hybrid that was really designed and built by the Hamer dudes.... Joined: September 2013 Posts: 52 Location: Brisbane Australia | Thanks Damon67, a look around has definitely reignited my passion for a Deacon. I will have a closer look at the Viper (I think I have actually played one of those!) and the VXT. The VXT doesn't grab me the way the UKII, Breadwinner, Deacon, etc do. One of the reason I love my Les Paul Recordings (but do not like Les Pauls Standards, Customs, etc) is the motivation behind the changes and 'twiddly bits' on the Recording. I think that is what touches me with the UKII, Breadwinner, and Deacon ie the innovation and sheer 'why not' factor! That's what I like about my Made in Japan Fenders - they take what is a pretty standard and boring design and add a "What the..!" factor. Somethings were good ideas, done really well, that just didn't catch on at the time (I kind of see that with the UKII, Breadwinner, and Deacon) and somethings there are great ideas but they didn't work so well in practise (that sounds a bit familiar too). Either way the Viper and VXT are more 'mainstream' to my eyes, but.... I'm happy to be educated ![]() ![]()
