Looks good, but price is way higher than what I'd be willing to pay.

$1200 for a vintage, top-of-the-line guitar.

Ovations just don't get any respect.

Some may not agree with what I plan to say but in 12/2003 I saw a buy it now for a 1980 1658-4 CL 12-string...fortunately, it was early in the morning and it had just been listed. I immediately did the BIN for $902. Seller told me that within 15 minutes after my purchase, he had over ten attempts to buy it from the US, UK, and Canada. Not the seller's fault but we had a number of telephone conversations as UPS screwed up the guitar in shipping requiring it to go to the factory - complete take down of the top, rosette, etc. I was told by the factory that the rosette was a $365 item.

I started with the acoustic 1158 CL back in 1980 (NAMM guitar). Of 12's, I have had my current shiny bowl small soundhole Balladeer, several Glen Cambells, CL's, and the Adamas I. Sold off the Clen Campbells (great guitars) but the CL's were my favorites. Current are the 1659 and two 1658's (natural and cherry). I also have the Martin D-45 12-str and a great Takamine.

If no unreparable finish cracks, etc., it should be at least $1.200 to $1,400; finish crack noticeable but sealed $950-1,050.

Personally, I learned from several OFC'ers (Samova, Michael Wong, Dave Witko, etc.) to hold firm and ask for the value that they should sell for.

In most cases, we are talking about a guitar that may be 30-34 years old and there is no repair or custom shop available. I agree with Beal that the Adamas I is the best 12-string out there but I also feel that the 1658 is the best wood top 12. They are that good.

This guitar (now aware of disclosure) sold for a price that, unless the sale is based on a loss of a job or medical bills, may not be seen in the future. They are hard to find and that good. A quality 1658 will only be more expensive in the near future.

I haven't bid yet, as I don't have an estimate on shipping/customs costs. Also the sellers says he know nothing about guitars and can't comment on structural integrity etc. He said it had been played in church and the was in storage for 30+ years, but offered to take pictures of potential crucial areas. I would love to take a leap of faith and go for it, but have had previous bad experience. Not sure if a ruler straight edge across the top or along the neck would help if there is no tension on the strings.

always a tuff decision...the freight to Seattle is stated very high on that one. good luck! I gave up trying to sell my long neck banjo. I would have bought Patch's shiny bowl.
I think the 1158 sold the first time for 919$ but the guy didn't pay

Well I got outbid pretty much last minute when I thought I had nailed it already. Just as well, as I did not really intend to bid as high as I eventually did. But I guess the heart wins over the head once in a while.
