Location: Birmingham, Al. | Will anybody else admit this? lol. I've been experimenting with using an unwound 3rd string on my Ovation. I use DR Rare 11's on my guitar and decided to swap the 3rd string which is a .022 for a plain string which is 0.19. I play a good bit of lead and since I'm primarily an electric player that does a lot of bends this feels and sounds very good to me. It really doesn't change the basic sound to my ears and plays really well. Anyone else?

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Just built a 4-string, Martin-scale (25-3/8-inch) critter, with a 1-1/2-inch neck, & used a .020-unwound, for the G-string. Pretty racy, eh?

I don't play a lot of bends, as I am not much of a lead player. On my Hamer Newport I have flatwounds (D'Addario Chrome 10-48) with a wound 3rd string which is easy enough for 1/2 step bends. On the Viper and Deacon I use a plain 3rd string. I'll be trying a set of Zebra wound strings on the Deacon when I finish the new nut (just refretted the neck). The 3rd is wound on the Zebras. The Deacon has piezo saddles, so I am curious how the Zebras sound through the acoustic side.

Location: Jet City | I play leads. I bend a lot. I just assume it's going to be more difficult on an acoustic period, regardless of the wound or unwound 3rd. |

I was using DR Rare 10's on my acoustic for a little while with an unwound 3rd. It played very well. It rivalled some electrics that I've played. Similar to a Strat with the early rounded (7.25 ?) radiused fretboards. The 10's were a little thin sounding for me so I switched to 11's. Not as good as 12's but better than the 10's. With 11's I figure I get the best or worst (lol) of both worlds. Right now I am using 11's with the wound 3rd. But I'm not gigging anywhere right now. Just enjoying my guitar and keeping my hands in shape. |

Location: Utah | To follow up on the Zebra strings, I like them a whole lot. They sound remarkably good via the piezo saddles on the Deacon Good enough to use for non-critical performances where an acoustic sound is desired. It isn't as good as an O or A plugged in, but really very close. The single strings also sound very good through the single coil pups (as originally on the Viper). They are a little different than my preferred pure nickel wound strings, but I would say that this is a matter of flavor rather than not sounding like an electric guitar.
If you've got a VXT or a Hamer DuoTone you will probably like these strings. If you have an acoustic with a magnetic soundhole pickup you will probably like these, too. |

Location: Utah | Yes, it is one of your frankensteins. A guy in Canada sold it to me. I changed up the wiring a bit on the switchology, and also rebound the neck and installed EVO Gold frets. Lots of pics in the BFLG forum on those 2 jobs.
The koa laminated pickguard has taken a bit of a warp. Do you have any suggestions on flattening it? |
