I have been using a keyser 6-string on a 12-string and wondering if it's really necessary to go with a 12-string? A few songs I capo at the 5th fret but majority of times it's living on the 1st or 2nd.

What are your thoughts? Does it make a big difference for a new guitar player such as myself?

I use a Shubb that's specifically designed for 12-string.
Works/intonates perfectly - and I often capo-up to the 7thFret . . .

As long as it is long enough to cover all 12 strings and strong enough to clamp them down to the fret, you're good. I like the adjustable capos so they don't clamp too hard. When they clamp too hard the intonation can go bad. But if what you have works, that is all that matters.

Wow.. that's up there.
I guess it's easier to do that than learn the mandolin.
.
And Ovations are the best guitar to handle that type of capo-ing.
But we all know that already.

I have a Kyser 12 string capo, and have a 1598 merb 12 string Adamas. What I like in this capo, it´s very quick to make changes, but from time to time don´t clamp the Low E octave, also the pressure is so strong, I´m afraid of damaging either the strings or fretboard. The capo I use now for my 12 is the Ptacek Capo: http://gregboyd.com/accessory_detail.html?accessory_key=1152&access... I have the wide neck capo. It´s beautiful, and you need to adjust moving the thumbwheel, very easy and you move until the low octave E rings true. The advantage, is the strings clamp against the capo rubber, rather than against fretboard, so no damage. And the sound on the low strings has better sustain, and resonance. You will notice when you go up the neck to the 5th or 7th fret. Also, I strongly advice you to buy a Mammoth Ivory pick, the Trifecta, http://www.tuskbuffer.net/index.html the site is under redisign, but can search in Google´s caché. The best sound in a pick for a 12, sustain, and clarity unmatched. And last but not least, a set of either Thomastik Spectrum, or Plectrum. The Spectrum has 2 flatwounds, the Plectrum 5. Incredible sound and resonance on the lows like no other. I tell you, when my Trifecta arrived, had great curiosity to listen how it sounded, then the first strum and started to sing... my heart resonated like never before in my life, I touched God. Was and incredible, but horrible experience at the same time. My mother amazed "You´re singing beautiful!!", and replied, "It´s not me, it´s the pick". For 1 week, I didn´t touch my guitar, so powerful experience I was afraid to live that experience again of being one with God singing. So my 2 cents in your 12 string journey.

I generally use the NS Capo.
It works on 12-String, but it is not easy to change quickly like a Kyser.
But the you can adjust the tension.

@alpep - "learn to play in all keys"

I hear ya, Al.. and that sentiment makes me sorely miss and yearn for the purist approach I had way back in the beginning; however, and sadly to its demise as life's time and focus demands quickly progressed, the devil never showed up at the crossroads and I ended up with a job, a wife, kids, a mortgage, a lawn to mow, and a capo.

I'm with Al too but think roundabouts are a better alternative to crossroads. Of course being pagan we just call those intersections and nobody shows up unless its a full moon.

Although capos can certainly be used to get certain sounds and effects which you would be unable to get without them. Such as George Harrison putting the capo on the 7th fret for Here Comes the Sun

And Glen Campbell got amazing sounds out of his capo especially when doing California beach type music

Yeah he did. I heard him say somewhere.. can't remember for sure where.. that discovering the possibilities with a capo in his youth was a big influence on the expansion of his playing range.

I just see too many people playing at open mics with 2 capos and 4 tuners hanging off the headstock of their guitars and it makes me crazy

I'd lose all that stuff so I'm disqualified from trying. Equal argument is playing without makes learning expanded chord shapes mandatory. For sure the music effect desired should dictate the approach.
