Location: When?? | There's bound to be an answer for this, but in my not-so-infinite knowledge of Ovations I certainly don't know it.
Why is it that there are no fingerboard inlays on many of the top-end special edition models like the anniversaries and such? Of course, many have the particular model's logo or inlay on the 12th fret or something of the sort, but none on the other frets. I'd think those would be the most decorated of fingerboards, but many are plain and bare. Just curious about that. |

Also, the player doesn't see the fingerboard.
But I did finally realize that fingerboard inlays do make it easier for Other people to see where you are playing.
So when you are playing along you can tell whether that bar-chord is a B or a C.

Location: When?? | Ah.. got it. Kind of like dining on diminutive dabs of bland food in a posh and trendy restaurant is elegant, understated and sexy. Damn, I must be deep in the slums then since every time I get roped into going to such places I usually stop at Subway afterward for nutrient intake, then after getting home I burp it up while playing my inlaid-neck guitars. My wife already knows this.. but please don't tell my mother-in-law! |

Moody.. yep.. I hear ya. And don't get me wrong.. I fully appreciate the less-is-more aspect on a lot of things. A snow-covered country lane is always more pretty to me than Bourbon Street. Definitely an "eye of the beholder" scenario. So therein lay my answer to the non-inlay curiosity since I didn't really consider the manufacturing curve would be so sharp for many players in the difference between, say, a Custom Legend and a 1537.. but I guess the line has to be drawn somewhere.
Thanks for the dialogue. Footlong BMTs are on me next time.. if.. you'll let me play that 1537 :-)

Location: 6 String Ranch | a fingerboard with out inlays is called a "blind" fingerboard. Most often seen on fretless basses. And to Moody's point it can look elegant and classy. I thought so anyway so when we started with some of these it seemed like a good way to go to separate from the rest of the line where the inlay patterns were family oriented. Gurians were the first guitar I saw that did it, (besides classics). A nice way to make a statement, Moody says it's elegant and I liked it, so there is your answer. |

Thank you. I figured there must be an actual term for it. As for elegant, do you know of any models (Ovation or otherwise) where the wood is polished to a high sheen? |

Location: When?? | During work times it's Fresno (or Fremont.. lately in the bay area).. during non-work times it's most often Shaver Lake (Central Sierra 5,600' up). Since you and Dan often connect on guitars, I assume you are somewhere near his OC zone. |
