An Alien 4-string bass, received late 90's, handed on
A "no-name" classical guitar, received last month, handed on
A Guild acoustic, won't part with
A California Strat, traded in on something else
A Yamaha classical, handed on
A Guild classical, 45-years-young, received Memorial Day weekend, keeping in my stable
I know some of you probably have had this happen to you, too, and thought it would be fun to compare notes.

Location: NJ | When I was a kid, my neighbor GAVE me an old Gibson Melody Maker (single cutaway, 3/4 neck) that he found stashed behind the seat of an old pickup truck.
I sold it to a friend - for Cheap.
He sold it to a music store - for NOT-so Cheap.

Location: Indiana | A woman I knew years ago gave me an old Washburn acoustic (in need of some major repair....or flowers). Also, when I was in high school (I graduated in 71) a friend gave me a Silvertone guitar to smash up. I never did do it. Still have the guitar. It's one of those with the amplifier built into the case. Everything still works.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Sort of. This sounds made up, but it's true. Friend of my wife, named Cindy was a part time caretaker for an elderly woman who lived alone. The old babe gets too frail and moves into a nursing home. Her son and Cindy clean out the house and find this old ukulele in a rotted case. He gives it to Cindy who (knows I play) brings it to me to tune for her so she can learn how to play. Well, son of a beech the uke is a 1952 Martin 1T tenor in cherry condition. I tune it and Cindy loses interest in it before she even starts. So I offer to buy it from her, knowing full well what this uke is worth (it was a fair offer). She said she was not comfortable taking money for it until the old dame dies so she just left it with me. That was over a year ago and from what I understand granny is doing quite well and should live for quite a few more years (hopefully).

Location: Hicksville, NY | - A fake Gibson [supposedly J-45] that my aunt gave me. It's with the darn thing that I taught myself how to play. I accidentally slipped in the hallway and end up smashing it, after taking a shower.
- Fender USA Standard Strat [1983]. Given to me by my dad as a Christmas present, and had an "on and off" relationship with it over the years. It only has one volume and one tone control with the output jack in place of the second tone control. Unfortunately, it's not a collectible item but I am keeping it for its uniqueness. I still have it.
- No name classical guitar. Acquired it from my brother after he claimed that he had little use for it, and was in the process of moving to Irvine with his wife and son. Ended trading it in for a Takamine EC132C.
- Jasmine dreadnaught that I got for free after purchasing 10 sets of D'addario strings at Guitar Center. Still unopened from its box, it was raffled at my sister's baby shower. |

Long-long time ago, someone gave me a Guild that a dozen other people had learned to play on.
After I learned my first four chords (G,E,Am,D) I gave it to someone who actually knew how to play. Even then, I didn't wanna see a real musician without an instrument. |

Location: Michigan | 36 years ago I borrowed a friends 1965 Epiphone John Lennon Casino .I have asked him numerous times to take it back but he just says dont worry about it .His parents made him pick an instrument to learn when he was about 12 years old so he picked guitar.He did not want to learn music so needless to say he never learned how to play it.It is a fine peice of Kalamazoo Michigan workmanship from the 1960's era.GWB |

Location: SoCal | Glen Campbell reissue which is on long term loan.
A couple of years ago a good friend who plays lefty, was given a beat up 1969 Glen Campbell 12 string. He then gave it to me. Last year it went back to the factory for a whole new body, Adirondack spruce top, shiny bowl (handlaid fiberglass), carved winged bridge, all with the original 1969 neck.
Needless to say, both guitars are killer! How killer you ask? Even with the OFC guitar and an Adamas I 12 string, both GC's get played quite a bit.
That killer. One of these days I'll have to post pics of them together..... |

Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado | I have had two nice guitars given to me and a whole bunch of junky ones. The two nice ones are a 78 Jazz Bass given to me as a gift for working with a show choir at a small high school in Colorado. And a 1112 Classical along with a set of bagpipes that belonged to my ex-brother-in law's deceased first wife. (But that's another story..)
I still have both of these and they are viewable in the photo gallery if you are so inclined.

Location: chicago | I was given a Hernandiz classical by an old fellow I met once said his wife used to play when she was alive, I thought he was letting me borrow it but when I went to return it he said hang on to because he was moving out of state that was ten years ago.....sweet sounding guitar too!

5 years ago I told him that I was moving to Australia and I wanted to give it back.
He told me to take it with me.
I hardly ever played it and I ended up selling it to pay for the shipping for my 1768 from the US. |

He showed me an E minor and then left me to my own devices but told me I could keep the guitar. It's still going and is ideal for bashing around the backyard. My 12 year old son is learning on it these days. There are a couple of pics in my gallery.
