Ive seen this mixer/interface on eBay and was wondering if any of you pro's/home recorders have any insight.

I was thinking of one day getting a MOTU 828MkII (one day... :( ) as I heard that they can be used as a standalone mixing desk.

Someone who was selling a MOTU was also selling a Yamaha 01X and told me that the Yamaha would be more suited to my needs, ie audio interface for home recording but also a standalone mixer for garage jam sessions. (And maybe maybe one day do a gig.) (BIG maybe!)

I own one and really like it. The technology is terrific and I bought it as I wanted to major on Cubase SX and it has some awesome features that provide seemless integration with that software. V Cool.

The implementation of firewire it uses has some proprietary aspects to it that make it finicky to set up initially. It is very intollerant of other firewire devices on the PC. I would suggest if you are not using it weekly/or an electronic 'savant' that it may prove too fiddly to remember how to use. But if you use it regularly it is awesomely powerful and really good value, and wonderful build quality.

I actually dont take it out the house now and bought an Alesis F/W Multimix 16ch for mixing outside the home (also gives me F/W recording interface for mobile recording that's easier to manage outside the home). That's not to say that the 01X is not a wonderful digital mixer for those purposes, I just needed more that 8 inputs for some tasks. However the O1X is still my recording I/F in my studio at home.

Check out this website's forums 01XRAY for more insight and stories that will curl your hair, but dont be frightened by the ineptitude and biases of other people. I think there are several Aussie users on there too.

If you want to more email me.

The MOTU equipment is really nice high end consumer grade stuff for the home studio but a mixer would make more sense if you wanted to use it for garage jam sessions.
