OK, hopefully, a simple question: What type of wood is the center strip in the lamination? Not quite mahogany, and not dark enough for maple, either.

Either mahogany (the dark one), or maple cut cross-grained (a little darker than the other stripes, but become a similar shade at the curve of the neck heel.

OK, that's a concensus & quarrel- oops, I mean quorum.
Now, the reason I ask, and yes, I need more medication, is that I am attempting to reproduce the peghead on an old 1615-4.
BTW, does anybody out there have a detailed, measured diagram of the peghead? I could probably fake it, but having the factory specs would be good, too!

seesquare - I'm trying something similar - to add the skunk stripes to an existing solidbody neck. I'm not trying to copy it exactly, but it's going to be a bear. I got the wood binding strips from stewmac. The hard part will be routing out the channel from the curved neck.

Not to be confused with the mahogany, maple, ebony, maple, mahogany strip found on others.

Jason,
You're right, I was thinking adamas.

Actually, my 1976 CA has a mahogany, maple, (and I believe it to be) maple center stripe, maple, mahogany. It's really pretty.

Doing inlay down the back might be pretty hard. How about just putting it on the road and let them paint lines down it?
Seriously it's probably best to build it from scratch so you get the benefit of the strength ot the laminates.

Also somewhere in the back of my mind there's a bell that's ringing and it says that some of the center stripes were also maple, just set 90* to the other two plys of maple. Gives you added strength.

I've seen some collectors that had different woods ... I remember seeing ebony as a center stripe and I think the 94 had something exotic, maybe called purpleheart?
