What first attracts you to a song.....the melody or the lyrics, or both. Or, like me, does it change from day to day.

I tend to like lyrics most of the time and I'm more of a sweet melody person than something a bit more harsh.

The melody brings attention to the lyrics. I guess that's why it's music... if I don't like the tune, I don't listen to the lyrics.. (in other words, 'rap music' is an oxymoron :) )

The music and the overall feel. Then I'll listen to the words.

I remember back in High School, a teacher asked the class something along the lines of whether we listened to the words of a song, or the sound of the song.

I was the only one that said 'the sound'.

I think vocals are another instrument, but then again, some lyrics can turn you off a song.

Half of the time, I can't hear (or understand) what they're saying anyway.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with muzza, I can't usually understand the words either unless it's a really old song from back before my hearing got so bad.

Most songs start before the lyrics start. I catch the intro and it catches me or it just passes by.

Varies song by song. One of my latest earworms, Nowhere With You by Joel Plaskett, it was the beat, the na-nas, then the line "I'm so cheap I might as well be free.." in that order that drew me in to the song.

It's got about the next thing to no melody, being almost a chant, so musicality wasn't really part of the interest.

A sense of energy is what draws me. Passion. Commitment.

..Speaking of a musical 'hook' in an arrangement...I always like the beginning of "Rhinestone Cowboy"...it had my ear from the start.

"Rhinestone Cowboy" became a bit of a joke for a while, I think maybe because of the movie movie" Rhinestone". I did not like it myself for a while but when i stopped and listened to the words i became a fan of that song.

One of our Australian comedians did a fine rendition of this song with the new title..."Well Hung Ploughboy"...I liked it better than the original

I'm reasonably certain you haven't offended any well hung ploughboys, not in Oregon anyway.
