Does anyone out there have the equipment to convert this to a usable, modern format??? This tape has to date back to 1971.

I think I was only 16 and Captain YoYo and the rest of Seadogs were younger than that. I'm sure that toward the end of the tape I will be doing more yelling than singing. But it's kinda like finding lost Beatle tapes collecting dust in a closet. Well...maybe not really quite like that. On top of that I have some 35mm slides from the event. The new Star Trek type scanner I have will allow me to convert them to digital. Be afraid....be very afraid. I'm talking fringed leather vests here. I just remembered the name of the guy running the Sony reel to reel...Don Whaumbat. Thanks Dave...I'll be in touch. And thanks Stephen...I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the link Mitch..you have mail. And BruDev..."might require some noise reduction"...never has there been a more accurate suggestion made!!! Put that tape through noise reduction software and there might not be anything left!!!!

Just didn't have the motivation to try to find a working recorder. I knew there was a lot of stuff I had recorded over many late nights, but didn't care at the time. I recently discovered a cassette I didn't even remember I had - I'd apparently copied a bunch of stuff, finished and unfinished - and promptly forgot about it. Now I'm really glad I have it. Maybe I'll even finish some of those songs I started 30 years ago...

Pre-70's is no problem because the raw tapes used some kind of animal fat in the production as a lubricant (whale blubber?). I don't know. But in the 70's they outlawed it's use and tape manufacturers had to come up with a synthetic which the did and it worked fine. Or so they thought. Some 20 years later the tapes started "drying out" became unplayable. Btw, by accident in the late 80's they switched to another type of synthetic lube that does not show the same problem. Anyway, the problem with STS is quite serious and I've got some tapes effected with it that can not be played. There is a workaround that by heating the tape in a convention oven you can draw out enough lubricate to make it one time playable to make a copy. I have not tried this yet, but I did make sure that the DiLongi convection oven we justy bought was sized properly for a reel. Dave

It's quite a common practice with old tapes, and there are facilities that have specially-designed ovens and have the expertise to ensure that the outcome is not one of your little sister's EasyBakeOven Brownie projects gone awry . . .

I pulled out the Norelco cassette player that you could stack 6 cassettes in. I saved the Sony R to R, but I can't remember seeing the tapes full of stuff from the 60s and early 70s. I still give her hell about getting rid of about 50 perfectly good cassette tapes for $5 at a garage sale.
