Location: Rocky River, Ohio | hi guys, everyone had been so helpful this weekend with my 2 issues with my buzzing balladeer and my stinky elite..
well, not sure if it's just me, but does anybody feel that Adamas 1818 light strings have a much firmer tension than other lights like elixir or john pearse.
I usually use the latter brands, but had a few of the 1818 sets around, and after stringing up my legend, it seems like the strings are harder to fret. The action height seems the same, it's the tension. It seems like it's harder to push down the string to the fret..
Am i crazy?....thanks as always.

Location: 6 String Ranch | The 1818 vs the D'Addario J16 or all the equlivents. The Adamas strings originally had equal core and wrap. The others had a thicker core which gives them slightly higher tension so you should be feeling just the opposite.
SOOOO, the possabilities are:
1. I've got this wrong and the thinner core has higher tension
2. they aren't doing equal core and wrap anymore since Dad is making all the strings anyway.
3. You're feeling it differently than what it is.
4. There are other forces at work here and we'll need to have Moody investigate. |

I sell web tension control equipment for processing everything from toilet paper to steel cable. You cannot really tell anything about the "tension" by pressing down on the strings with your fingers. You need a special "deflection gage" to measure tension over a given distance. String guage however makes a HUGE difference in the way they feel. There is such a thing as a thicker string with lower tension. Guess which one are harder to fret? I would say the best thing to do would be go through a couple of sets of strings by different makers, in EXACTLY the same guage (read the sizes of every string in the set) And see which ones feel and sound the best. If you waste a little money now, you'll save allot on sets of strings you don't like in the future. If you decide you don't like the 1818's, I'll take them off your hands. I think the play just fine... |

Location: Tampa, FL | I recently bought some 1818's during the recent MF firesale (or whatever) and I think they 'feel' softer. Something akin to more flexible. I like 'em. |

The thicker strings/lower tension is especially true in the nylon string world. Even more so now with the carbon strings.
Fred - settled (for the time being....) on Hannabach Goldin with the carbon trebles. Medium/high tension and they have a wonderful sound, very balanced with no booming bass. Real attack in the trebles, although the top E takes a lot of pressure to sound cleanly. |

In my quest, I went after sets that had more mid-range and highs that were not "super bright", accepting the fact that Ovations for some reason project more bass than their wooden counterparts, but sounded "thin" in the middle. adding the brilliance of carbon (Savarez Alliance or Crystal) trebles STILL did not get me the midrange I was looking for.
As for the current topic, I've merely dabbled in them. I know I like the the way the 1818's play and sound. I think my 12 Fret came back with D'add EXP's I need to take my calipers to it to verify the diameters. Did anyone else notice the 1818 lights have a .044" 5th string? This *might* explain what was setting off Ernie's Jedi fingers. |
