I made the mistake of letting a friend borrow my 1758-4 for a few weeks, not realizing he was going to take it out to play an 'open mike night' at the local tavern....a few times..

He used his own deep bowl case instead of my minty 9110....

His was not an Ovation brand...

To make a long story short, the combination of whatever glue is used in the case, and smoke from bar has caused my guitar to effectively smell up my entire den.

I've left it on a stand, without the back cover to try and "air" it out, but no luck, it totally reeks..it actually effects me when i play it, i can't even describe the smell..

Any ideas outside of hanging an air freshner inside the thing?...

thanks in advance..i figure you guys would be the only people i would even dare to bring this up...

ernie

Sunlight breaks down the chemicals that cause smells. Try putting it somewhere the sun shines on it.

Distilled white Vinegar and water 50/50. Damp dry and air it out.

Isn't that what you do when your dog gets skunked?

What if you start with a normal cleaning/detailing of the outside, new strings, and let bright indirect sunlight do the rest?

Febreeze is a logical idea, but CAREFUL....I used it in a case I bought off of eBay (smelled of mothballs) and now the case smells of Febreeze and I can't get THAT smell out of it.

I'd let it air out outside, that is what I am doing with the case.

You are right Cliff.
Over all these years and close calls with the dogs, we have been lucky not to have to address a skunked dog.

I have never smelled a horse's ass either... so maybe I should not even venture on ridding ernie's guitar of that awful smell.

I have and, I can attest, tomato juice is one answer to a skunked dog. They say it's the acid but, frankly, I was looking for an answer and I really didn't care "why" it worked.

Good luck with the guitar.

Maybe an intoxicated Red Man chewer used the guitar as a spittoon. That particular formula, mixed with nicotine, does smell a bit like equine hindquarters. You might try putting a mirror inside the box to investigate. These things happen in bars. I think the vinegar and water solution would help kill the malodorous lingerings. Good Luck, Buck

I've been advised against using Febrize or any other 'odor removing' chemical for cleaning gig bags, etc., since it really only just covers up the smell. I can only imagine the same would apply to this situation.

Some form of extremely careful cleaning is gonna be the ticket.

I would agree on the Febrize, et al and try play the cleaning conservatively as well, Steck. It's possible you could just make it worse. A very careful cleaning combined with a liberal beating applied to your friend should be the ticket.

Good luck.

I solved this problem with a "project" Legend I bought, fixed-up, and sold in a few weeks. The WORST problem it had was the smell...just like you're describing. I have an Ozone-making air purifier that we run all the time to clean the air in our 2,000 sq/ft house. I put the guitar on the stand, tilted it forward a little, and pointed the purifier right at it about 2 feet away. Left it like that for about a week. Then I did the same to the case. When it was all over all you could smell was old wood and a little bit of that resin smell from the bowl. If you don't own one of these purifiers, maybe you have a friend who uses one and you could arrange something with them. They cost about $550, so you wouldn't buy one just for your guitar. John <>{

thank you all for your help, it seems john and i are on the same page...

since I haven't seen the sun around here all weekend, i put the guitar right in front of our air quadra ozone emitting air purifier....i had it there all day and i can tell there has been a marked improvement...

it's going to stay there for the next few days. I have it on the stand with the back cover off, so the ozone can go right into the bowl and reach the exposed wood.

thanks again, hopefully in a few days it will be totally gone.

and yes, my friend has been verbally reduced to mince meat.

you could try a scent cover up that hunters use on their clothes, body etc. available at any bass pro shop or or its equivilent. try not to saturate the neck or any of the wood that is unfinished. do this a few times and then use whatever guitar polish you normaly use for maintinance.

hope this helps

try this stuff called Nature's Miracle. It's for pet odors but it might do the trick.
