Location: Orlando, FL | I recently purchased an Ovation Celebrity CC059, nylon string guitar online. Everything was fine with the guitar, except that I was disappointed with the action. Although I realize that "classical" guitars do not have the same low action as steel string guitars, I felt that the action on the guitar could be better. After adjusting the truss rod and removing both shims,
the best I could get the action was about 5/32 at the 12th fret of the low E string. I took it to a guitar shop/luthier who said that the action couldn't be lowered any more, because it had a "bad" neck angle. (the frets didn't line up with the top of the bridge.) He said that with the pickup attached to the saddle, he would have to shave down the top of the saddle, and then re-round it, to get the action down.
5/32 may be close to the high end tolerance for a
classical guitar neck, but I wanted to know if these guitars are designed to provide a better action setting than that, and wondered if anyone else had better luck with the CC059.
I've been playing Ovations since 1973 and have owned a half dozen of them. This was the first real disappointment I've had with one. |
