I tried a les paul today, with block inlays and it skeeved me. Not the sound, but the playing surface. I wasn't playing the wood, rather I was playing the inlays and didn't like it. I am actually coming to like the way they set up my MEWP with no fret markers at all, just side markers. I suppose they could've put a target at the 12th fret, but that would be it. It's so nice just to feel that plain ebony under your fingers. I was wondering if others have experienced this.

I've got my fingers on the strings. I can't and never have felt the fretboard. Of course that might just be my ignorance.....

Huh, I don't think I've ever noticed the inlays on any guitar I've played. Well...while I was playing it. Except maybe for looking at them so I knew which fret was which. :) Feel-wise, though...never noticed. Now watch...that's all I'll notice. NOOOOOOOOOO!

I felt like I was playing on a chalkboard.

Obviously, a sensitive kind of guy. I've got guitars at home with extensive inlays and others with no inlays. Honestly can't tell the difference. Of course, you were playing a Givson, which to me always feels, well, different.

Damn Gibson guy could never get his guitar inlays right, Martin guy knew how to do it, and so did Mr Kaman. I would suggest that you not even consider that sort of failed technology and get a Viper or Breadwinner if you HAVE to play a solid body.

It's personal preference. There is a difference in feel from ebony to rosewood to finished maple(new fender) to raw old maple of a vintage tele. The big pearl blocks will be a bit slick. Some will never notice, some will go crazy with it. I think it comes down to if you love the guitar you're playing you forget about the fingerboard(or come to love it, whatever it is).
