Joined: December 2004 Posts: 13 Location: NoVa / Richmond, VA | I found one of these used at a local store. I have been in the market for an Ovation. I have mainly been looking at the 1778 lx (elite lx) and I like the mid-depth bowl. The 1988 is in great condition, and I just played it the shallow bowl does sound nice with it. The price is $750 with the case. I was just wondering if this price was a good deal.. I don't really have much knowledge on the collectors series. Thanks... Adrian

Second, the '88 Collectors is a pretty cool guitar -- especially if you like to play up the neck. If I remember right, it has 16 frets clear of body. However, $750 is a high price for one even if it is in perfect condition and has the Certificate of Authenticity. It may be worth that as a guitar, and it is worth it if you really like it and think it suits you well for the price. But the '88's routinely sell for a good bit less than that on eBay. Perhaps you can use that as a bargaining chip to get a better price.

If you have tried these guitars and you like one and can get it for $600 that is an excellant deal. I have seen a few people absolutely love many of the diffeent Colector models. It is never over which is better but what works for you! Welcome and enjoy.

Not a bad sound unplugged but meant to be plugged in. What are you going to use the guitar for? On stage? at home? Do you normally play way up the neck? Would a cutaway work for you or do you need the extra frets the 88 offers? Personally, I prefer the 90 Collectors for a guitar with the very long neck. Deep bowl for good acoustic sound, but it has the long neck. And if you're going to be playing just plugged in, why not watch for a EA63 Viper?

Not only does the 88 have a longer and nicer neck, it has a more solid sound. If I recalled correctly, master P.Templeman once claimed the 88 has the exact sound people have been trying to get miking a Martin dreadnought. I am not, in any way, saying the Legend LX is inferior. I just like the 88 more, personally. By the way, I still hate the OpPro premp.

Joined: February 2003 Posts: 2178 Location: the BIG Metropolis of TR | Welcome Adrian, The '88 IS a cool looking guitar but what you might consider about the LX is the new neck system, lighter bowl,Mid-depth bowl, lifetime warranty (new/never been sold) plus the newer updated electronics (OP-PRO) now that you've gotten a better deal ($600) on the '88 you'll have to decide if the LX features are worth $360 more! Did you play both unplugged? Also you didn't say whether or not the '88 came with a case? Mike

The most important thing is which is the better deal. Pretend that the '88 is like a crappy no name brand or something. Do you still like it better or is it just the fact that it is an Ovation Collectable?

Some are more sought after than others....
