Location: Middleburg, Fl | I have 1977 Balladeer and would like to change the tuners. I am considering Schaller Mini Locking Tuners, but I have question ( probably a dumb one). The original Ovation tuners are attached to the head using two screws and from what I can see looking at pictures of the Schallers they only use one screw. Will the Schallers "drop in" or is a modification required? And is one screw sufficient to hold the tuner in place?
thanks for your replys

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Hi, Onemore, and welcome to the OFC. One screw is certainly enough to hold the tuner on given that there is a slim nut that you tighten on the other side of the headstock as well.
As far as it being a "drop-in", I suspect that you will have at least one empty screw hole looking at you, and maybe two, if the other hole doesn't line up with the one you already have.
Best case scenario is that the screw hole on the new tuner lines up with one of the ones you have already, then it just screws on. Worst case is that you have make a new screw hole for the new tuner, then it's not so pretty.....
If these are the Schallers I saw from Stew-Mac, I think you're looking at worst case.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure I really need new tuners, but the Ovation tuners are extremely tight and tuning is a little difficult. It's hard to get the note right on, if that makes sense. I have oiled the tuners hoping they would be come more "sensitive". I defintely don't want to ruin the looks of the guitar if I can find another solution. |

Location: Tennessee | OneMore. Welcome. If the tuners are tight, you might want to try backing off the screw that holds the buttons on ... most Shallers are adjustable that way. It should be a flathead screw ... try backing each one off half a turn and see if that does the trick. |
