Since I am new here, let me first say Hello All!

I just purchased an Adamas 1597 SMT. I bought it for a number of reasons, but mostly because the sound was incredible. This is my first Ovation, well its my first quality guitar period as I've only been playing for less than 2 years.

I would be interested in knowing what others think of this guitar (quality, playability, durability).

What strings are best to use considering I've never dealt with a graphite top. I currently use Elixirs on my Ibanez.

And why all of the prejudice against Ovation as well as carbon fiber?

Hey, welcome!

Elixers, Adamas, D'Addarios will come up as the prefered strings. Try and see what works for you.

TRy a search on this site as well.

Peace

Welcome, Chaotic. A couple of weeks ago my Adamas CVT arrived. (Note to Cruster: you did a good job wiping off the fingerprint smudges and removing the beer and pizza stains after you got it from Cliff.)

The finish is flawless, and the gloss neck is very comfortable. The guitar is also nice and light.

Notes to the Mother Ship: the filing of the fret ends leaves something to be desired; they're not too bad, but they are a little rough. When I first inspected the guitar at the store, it looked like the nut slots were cut lower than usual. When I got it home and removed one of the two shims to lower the action, I got fret buzz at the first fret due to the low-cut slots. Overall the action is pretty good, but I'd prefer it just a tad lower and, unfortunately, I can't remove even one shim. I may therefore have the nut raised a bit, but I feel I shouldn't have to do this to adjust the action; that's what the removable shims are supposed to be there for. As I said, compared to most acoustics or acoustic-electrics, the action as set up by the Mother Ship is fairly fast; it's just not ideal for me.

The unplugged sound isn't bad, but it's not stupendous. It has a good bass response; the open Low E string really thunders. But that's okay; I wasn't expecting the unplugged sound to rival my Martin.

Where it really shines is plugged in. I bought an XLR cable, since the Adamas has an outlet for one, and it makes a world of difference; now I know how my Crate Acoustic 60 amp is REALLY supposed to sound. I have to dial down the treble a bit on the pre-amp, or else the sound is a bit too brittle.

The bronze finish doesn't look anything like the picture on the Adamas website; the guitar looks a lot darker - sometimes almost like a black finish in my dimly lit condo. But it is pretty, and the bronze nicely complements the wood tones of the epaulets. I also like the look of having no inlays on the fretboard - a nice "clean" look.

The onboard tuner is fun to play with, although sometimes I find I'm relying on my ears for that final little tweak of the tuning gear to get it just right.

Despite my disappointment about the action, I think the fact that my poor Martin hasn't been out of its case since the Adamas arrived says something. I've been playing so much my fingertips are sore even with the newly hardened calluses.

Chaotic, the prejudice against Ovations generally revolves around the idea that they aren't "real" guitars because they have "plastic" backs and, in the case of the Adamas, carbon fiber tops. Some purists won't look at a guitar unless it's made of Adirondack spruce and Brazilian rosewood. Ovations are what they are; they don't pretend to be all-wood boxes. Their forte is the acoustic-electric thing (although many in the OFC will tell you that some Ovations can and do rival or exceed all-wood guitars in unplugged sound quality); they're designed for hard use, and stand up well to being on the road. The Adamas in particular is less affected by (but not immune to) changes in temperature and humidity because its top is carbon fiber.

Welcome # 3000........Before I say my next comment please people, keep it in good humor and remember, I have nothing against Martin or Harley Davidson but here goes:

Harley Davidsons and Martins are alot like opinions.........every asshole has one!

Now with that being said I heard it from a friend put that way once. Yes, I like Honda motorcycles and I like Martin guitars.....just think they are overpriced. Will I own one someday, maybe.

Keep the comment above as that of innocent jabbing......if your offended then you guys are way too uptight!

Harleys and Martins, everyone should have one, and then move on if you choose.
Welcome #3000.

. . . now THAT'S what you're more likely to find "smeared" on my guitar as opposed to beer & pizza . . .

That has a nice ring to it.

Welcome and enjoy the "club". When ?s come up run a search on it and you will get info that has been kicked around in the past. I do this when I start "lusting" after another...

Did you sign the GAS waver?
Enjoy the guitar.

Welcome Chaotic! Theres just something about a roundback....the focus, projection and balance is hard to beat. I don't have an Adamas...yet! My new Elite LX acoustically sounds pretty damn good compared to my Martin. I'm still experimenting with string choices. Started with EXP D"Addarios, then 80/20 d'Addarios...on Elixer Nanos now?

Anyway WELCOME!

I'm sure there's lots of opinions. I've played an Adamas, and I couldnt believe the volume! I play a Custom Elite - granted, it has a wood top, but my favorite strings are GHS Bright Bronze Acoustic Light.

Welcome to the board Chaotic! We've been waiting for you, congratulations on being member number 3,000. You picked a great name for this place, btw. :)
As for your question about prejudices I'm afraid I have no clue. I do know that if everybody liked the same things this would be a pretty boring world.
