you know for what it is the estabon guitar is no where near the POS that I started out with.

I guess it is his obnoxious commercials that make him a big target but there are TONS of guitars by givsung, flendor, ariouch, eiptihorn, etc that are of the same quality, the only difference is they have a "name brand" on the headstock.

I buy some student quality guitars from an importer on Long Island and I get some good prices for stuff that comes from the same factory as all the major brands etc....hmmmmm maybe a Lost Art line???????

Recently, a very good friend asked what she should get for her son, who is 11 and wanting to learn to play guitar. His wish was for an 'eletric', she came to me and emailed me the exact ad in the first post of this thread. I saw that and was turned off by the 'cheesy' feel of the ad. My suggestion to her was that she locate a good instructor first (ask around, word of mouth, etc. she has a pretty amazing network of friends) and then use the instructor's recommendation as a starting point.

My question then. I am sure members of the august body (perhaps angst body) are regularly set upon by friends for similar recommendations/suggestions ...

How do you respond?

I saw one of the Estaban guitars for sale at the Detroit Guitar Show in November for $300  I got it down and played it, and believe me, it wasn't worth ONE hundred dollars!!!! And it did NOT have the amp or any of the other stuff with it!!!!

Answering the question as to what to recommend....I was asked by a friend who wants to get an acoustic for her teen-age daughter for Christmas, and I found some options and passed them on for her and her guitar-playing brother to look at.

The best deal I found for the money was a guitar called an Indiana Scout. Of course for $120 or so, it isn't much, but the sound for the money was decent and the playability was OK. But the quality of them was variable(I played several) and I told my friend that if they got that one, make sure her brother gives it a good checkout before they buy a particular one.

I see that the famous brand of Shitbox Guitars is alive and well with it's subsidiary of Esteban! When buying any kind of first time guitar buy it from a music store or experienced and reputable instrument dealer whether or not it is new or used. The Esteban guitars do make good birdhouses once the strings are removed. Play On!

John: My son-in-law bought a guitar for my grandson at a guitar shop, and they talked him into a POS off-brand nylone string that doesn;t stay in tune through one song. Of course, I recommended he get a Celebacy, but they wanted to save a couple hundred, so now -- he doesn;t play it at all. So buiying from a guitar store isn;t always the way to go -- IMHO. :D

A friend of mine imports things from China for a living and he said he can buy in quanities dreadnaughts such as this for $38.00 without electronics and with electronics for $56.00. So its a wonder how they do it? They are all laminated crap woods, but still...they must pay the workers 10 cent an hour.
Has anyone seen these Estebans...I saw him on tv rockin with one of the steel string acoustics in overdrive, it was funny...He really does play pretty damn good though! I bought my daughter a solid topped Alvarez for $149.00. I was blown away by the quality of this guitar. The inside work was clean with no flaws and pretty nice woods. Setup was superb. Finish was good but heavy.

And I always thought that guy was Zorro, without his mask. I don't know about these, but you can buy decent acoustic guitars for around $150. that are a lot better on the POS I started out with.

Al-

Don't do it! The local mom/pop started a 'house brand' of guitars. They're all built by Samick, which turns out some fine quality guitars. But, he just can't seem to sell them. His last sale was a 'buy one of my guitars at the sale price, get two more for a penny each.' He still has three stores full of them. No kidding.

My first guitar was a Yamaha FG-140 "Red Label", found in some long-forgotten pawnshop in Sacratomato, in 1975. I had the assistance of an Air Force buddy, who honestly, is the best guitarist I have ever heard (even when I WAS sober). We spent an entire day examining, and playing, rigorously, probably 75 different instruments for cost/quality analysis. $100.00, with case. Sold it to one of my coworkers, for twice that, about 1996, and could probably extort its return, if properly motivated.
Anyrate, if you don't mind gettin' a bit gritty, that's a source of fine, beginner, instruments.

That's why I said "reputable" music or instrument dealers. They may sell you a cheap guitar but if they are forcing a total POS on you that they are trying to unload then they are not reputable and you should check anyone out beforehand. The store would have a history of doing this. There are cheap playable beginner guitars as starters and then there are total POS's. Play On!

Have you guys Esteban's latest..........his all black electric guitar. I saw it the other night while channel surfing. It has a body somewhat like an Ovation Viper solidbody, but it has a pickguard and three single coil pickups like a stratocaster. This guitar also had the most horrible headstock I have ever seen. It was made to look like and E and it is terrible. But hey it does come with a rockin amp, and Esteban had a red shirt on while playing it. I guess the all black look is only for acoustic! :D

But looking at the ad it says that for three payments of $68 each you are getting an $800 value is the biggest load of crap yet. They think people are totally stupid. If it sounds too good it probably is and I would steer clear of this kind of deceptive advertising. Buy a brand name or get it from someone like Al P.

Are you sure it was an $800 value? I thought the last time I looked it was some bizarre ass number like $790.09. I mean, who values something in pennies once you get up over, say, $5? That just made me laugh. I can see some bean counter at Samick or Aria or whomever is making this saying, 'oh, well, with these wood selections and this special headstock, it should have a SRP of $790.09.' It's ridiculous.

Then again, I have a special place in my business plan for the QVC/HSN people. I have all the bases covered...
