Question about Breadwinner construction:

Are all of the Breadwinner bodies made of mahogany and are they all single piece?

I am contemplating a refinish of my black weiner and the purchase of a 6 string Deacon.

Cuz, I am getting frustrated with not being able to find a suitable Donor Body for a Deacon 12 string.

(Why?) Cuz, I am suffering a lack of patience and I'm fidgeting over the next project. I should know this will pass, like GAS.

In the lack of bottom feeder bodies on ebay I was considering picking up a nice Deacon 6 string. It would be sacreligious to tear down a good Deacon to make a 12 - and I do have this Black Breadwinner that I did pick up cheap.

i can assure you you won't find any of "bubba and the bottom feeders" (aka the bottom feeders) bodies on e bay, though we can can be rented cheap (except peggy) to the right person for a "quick set".

check and see if the neck cutout is the same size for 6 and 12. I'm thinking the 12 is wider but not sure.

I'll hit it with the scale and report back. Initial line up looked approximately the same.

If they are different I might need to get in good with my local cabinet maker.

And if I do go nuts and make my own bodies... I'll let you guys know!

W2 - Where there ever any "Limited" 12 strings?

A Limited 12-string sold on Ebay about a year ago for big ($2000+/-?) bucks. It looked great in the twelve string version...the only Limited I've seen that I liked.

Maybe some clarification is called for on my part.

I wouldn't want to tear apart a good working Ovation instrument. That is sacreligious and and dis-honors the work they did.

I would gladly ressurect a beat down broken instrument. That is a pleasure to do (no t-shirt).

If I had the tooling I could replicate an instrument. At what point it could still be called an Ovation would be in question.

I wish I had the tooling and, in fact, would love to make some instruments, but I'm not even close to that.

A 12 string Limited with real wood pick guard...

I could mark it OFC for Ovation !@#$@# Copy!

Uh-oh! It ain't that bad Mike! You'll find another guitar body! Don't start refinishing your weiner!

This thread is going to be trouble I think...

I'm with you on the preservation issue. I've had many vintage guitars over the years. If they were original I left them that way. Several of the Travis Beans had already been refinished and they were fair game, I had them stripped again and Hamer redo the finish.
It is interesting that the Vintage snobs always lean towards "originality" at the expense of everything else but just about every really old guitar I'v seen has usually needed some serious work to make it playable, Neck resets on 20's and 30's Martins, Gibsons and every original National I've bought needed work. I realize this has crossed the line of modificatrions to repair but it is a bit of a fuzzy line at times. Frankly I think a great old guitar that's had a neck reset, bridge reglued and bridge plate replaced and some fretwork and plays and sounds great is worth a whole bunch more than an all original, untouched guitar that needs all that done. Ah but what do I know, just a retired gas station guy.

The BW pocket for a six string neck is smaller than the roon needed for a 12 string neck.

Only by 1/8" or so. Nothing Mr. Dremel can't handle. Now if Bill(I sold the high octane stuff)II tells me the bolt pattern is different too I will just cry!

I will work on a dimension sheet and a router guide for a blank using a schaller bridge and Ovation neck. Probably will have to switch to the "stock" stuff like Warmoth and such if I want to make more than one or two.

I really should spend some time learning how to play one maybe?

Woodrow, three chords do it for me.

I agree with Bill. An old guitar that's been made playable is much better than an old guitar that's just old and can't be played. I'm not going to hot rod my 68 Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer, but I still need to put a shoulder strap button on, and while I'm at it, I'll put on the larger ones.

This weekend Mike. Thanks for reminding me. I tried to post some about a month ago, ran into some difficulty and then life got in the way and I forgot.

I sure agree with CWK2 on taking old guitars and repairing their problems, guitars are made to be played not hung on the wall as paintings. The only guitars that should be kept pristine are those with a history of some famous player, even then, you are talking museum piece, something the player him(her)self might not appreciate.

As guitars get older the necks warp the tops on acoustics bow etc. they need to be returned to their condition they left the factory as.

Woddy, same bolt pattern. Just that the wood is wider and it's a little on each side so when the bolts line up you can go Mr Dremmel in the inside and have a bit of over hang on the outside. Maybe add a thin veneer and blend since you're refinishing anyway or file away the wood once you see how much there is there.

I would rather enlarge the body socket than reduce the neck, no?

I am going to see what it takes locally to obtain a block, have the routing done by someone with the right tools and then shape and finish it. Probably do a Maple body (with a figured back) to test the waters and then find some Mahogany for keeps.

It's good to have a Project! Even if it means setting that Cold Fusion thing aside.

You may need to do both to keep the bolt holes lined up since they were both located off the centerline.

Heres an AL DiMeOlA tune that I have recorded, on my ovation recently. I hope it links; and if it does I hope I don't piss Al off.
